So as many of you know, I am currently on a cross country roadtrip. Presently Im in San Francisco and plan on going up to Seattle when Im done here to visit a friend. From there I will be working my way across the country to go back home (I somewhat live in both Philly AND NYC but will be heading to Philly first). Im a bit divided on which route I want to take though and would like to hear which direction you guys think I should go.

Im strongly considering leaving San Francisco earlier than planned and while one option involves temporarily going back down to LA (even though Im not a big fan) since Im back in contact with the friend that was hooking me up with work (he was in Greece the whole time that I couldnt reach him) and I could use the money, the more likely option is leaving here in a couple days, going up to Seattle (with a detour to Yosemite first) and then slowly making my way back home. While Im kind of broke, my room is subleased out till Oct 1st so I do have a quite a bit of time left still.

I followed the path of Route 66 here and feel I dont need to revisit any cities along that path (though I didn't necessarily dis-like any of those cities, I just want to check out new places). The things I enjoyed the most about this trip in no particular order was, the friends Ive made along the way, the breathtaking views I've seen, some of the unique 'you wouldnt see this anywhere else' sights and I did get excited about stopping in the bigger cities, most of which I made a point of staying over night in.

Please also note that Im camping to save money but have only been staying in established campgrounds (and yucky RV parks) as I feel safer in them as a single woman traveling alone.

The places I REALLY want to see on my way home include:
Yellowstone
Mount Rushmore would be nice but is not a requirement.
Denver (I would probably be able to find a place to stay for a night or two here since I know people who are originally from Denver)
Montana in general I hear is amazing.
Same thing with the Dakotas, though I would be much more disappointed to miss Montana.
As many National Parks as possible (I have the parks pass).

Thats about all I know about the northern states..... sad I know but exactly why Im doing this trip in the first place, to learn about all the stuff I didnt know existed in this glorious country I am even prouder now to call home.

I was also kind of considering a route like this one (route through Montana as well as Tennessee, which Ive also always wanted to visit, and Kentucky needs to be tweaked. I just knew I would rather go home via West Virginia which Ive never been to, than passing through Virginia, much of which Ive seen and DC which I like about as much as LA): Seattle, WA to Philadelphia, PA 19147 - Google Maps

It looks crazy on the map and is a bit overkill maybe, especially since Ive been feeling homesick and lonely doing this by myself but I did put on 5000 miles from Brooklyn to Santa Monica somehow and about 7000 miles on this trip total so far so 4000 to even 5000 miles getting across the country again doesnt sound too bad. Just hope I stop spending so much on food and my tires hold up as long as possible (they are Pilot 3's and have 9k miles on them but still have quite a bit of tread left).

Oh and dont worry guys, Ill find a way to share my pictures, though you will probably have to wait till I get home first as I stopped uploading pics way back in Saint Louis.

You're catching the best part of Montana, the east half is flat boring and full of mosquito splats.
If you want to see a lot of national parks, exit Montana thru Yellowstone, then head south thru Grand Teton, and then south thru Utard until you hit Zion, then hit all the nat'l parks across southern Utard, easterly. Then you can swing to Denver. Crossing Wyoming the way you are will be a long, flat ride.
Going thru Texas will be too, but I've been across the Great Plains via ND, SD, Nebraska, and KS; there just isn't a really interesting way to make that crossing... :tard:

Thanks so far for the ideas guys, Ill let you know what route I take when its official (if it ever is till it actually happens that is).

Also what route should I take up to Seattle? Since I was going to go to Yosemite I wasnt sure if I should go shortest route up to Portland (I want to stop in Portland on my way) directly from Yosemite or is it worth it to keep going up the Pacific coast? Im getting a bit tired of freezing my butt off along the coast though and wouldnt mind some warm weather again. Then again... I may end up missing it....

Wow! Heck of a road trip you’ve got going on here.

I rode down from BC through Montana last month on a road trip and agree…Montana was amazing. From there I shot south down into Utah and saw Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Moab in eastern Utah. Moab is off your currently mapped track a bit to the west, but if you like national parks, these two desert National Parks were really, really amazing.

Well I'd imagine this is a long ways off, but if you do make it over towards TN, theres alot of great roads and you have to do "tail of the dragon" and cherohala (sp?) skyway. We have a pretty large fz community over here and I'm sure you could round us up for a ride. We actually have a big group trip this sat doing alot of the fun twisties! PM when/if you make it this way and I can help with places to stay too. I've camped/hiked alot of the mtns and campgrounds all around the southeast.

You could continue through Yosemite on Hwy 120 to Lee Vining where you can ride north on Hwy 395 (Bodie the ghost town is worth a visit) to hwy 89 around the west side of Lake Tahoe and continue North on 89. The only problem is 3 really big and smokey Forest Fires above Quincy Ca.
Or in Truckee Ca you can go west on Hwy 20 to the central Valley and I-5 or farther west to Hwy 101 North.
Northern Ca is my back yard and have ridden most hwys so I can help with your routing.

I will pm you my contact information. Doug

Id love to ride tail of the dragon! I also want to stop in Nashville too though. That map I linked to is definitely going to be tweaked, probably many times before I head off. Its not official either that I will be going that far south. Its kind of my dream return home trip (or something like that) that Im planning here, I need to see where my finances are at by the time I start heading west again to see if I can even do it.

Ill keep this in mind depending on what direction I plan on heading from Yosemite, if I do end up going straight to Seattle from there it sounds like its certainly worth doing :) Is there a way/website to follow the path of the fires on a map or something along those lines?

Just out of curiosity, how many miles did you have on the Z before you said, "Aww F it... let's put 7k on this mammer jammer cross country?" 100? 200? Did you end up selling the Ninja before you left?

If it hasn't been mentioned... what about the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Well for what it's worth, if you make it over this way everything will be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper haha. Everything from gas to places to stay to even free food from southern hospitality!

Here's a great site for keeping an eye on the fires. Check out the map at the bottom of the page too.

I'll let you be the judge of best route. Undoubtedly, interstate 5 (I5) is the fastest track to Seattle. beautiful scenery along the way. Lots of pull off points you'll enjoy Oregon. Be prepared for the rain the more you approach the North. How's your tires? Although the hottest months (July, August)have to be the best in Seattle...... If it does rain, I can't imagine the roads being too dirty on account it rains a lot. Just be prepared.
Highway 101 is a great way to partially go north. You can drive through the redwoods then possibly make your way over to Interstate 5 from 101. Be prepared, pure country. Water on stand by.... I imagine once you reach I5 it's all buiseness (the more populated area in the not as populated US)the way up. It's the main route west coast from So Cal to Seattle. As memory serves I5 from the bay to Seattle is 14hours from my doorstep to down town Seattle. Of course non-stop.
By the way, I have to commend you. I think you driving across country is awesome! I wish I could of been around but pulling multiple shifts, and being slightly in the doghouse. Well nuff said. Anywho drive safe. I wouldn't miss the opportunity to go to Seattle in August.

For going up to Seattle, if you want to go as quickly as possible Highway 5 is the best. However it's straight, flat, boring (some hills in Oregon). Highway 101 is slightly better to ride on, but nothing amazing. You could take Hwy 1 up until it merges with the 101, that would probably be the best.

Actually now that I'm thinking about it.... Take HWY 5 up you'll pass right next to Mount Shasta and Shasta Lake, beautiful lake some nice camping around there. You'll enjoy it I think. That's right at the top of CA, so a nice stopping point coming out of Frisco. From there you can go up through Oregon, nothing crazy in Oregon (I don't like Oregon....maybe someone else has better recommendations).

If you would like to, on your way over from Seattle, I'm in eastern Washington near Spokane. I would NOT recommend stopping in Spokane, grungy city kind of gross, and nothing to see. And honestly, eastern WA doesn't have much....but I still would love to meet a forum member and go for a ride, even if just for an afternoon and lunch! :BLAA: My recommendation, on your way from Seattle it's roughly 4 hours to get to where I live and it's on the way to Idaho, also the HWY to get here from Seattle goes through the mountains so some good riding. Stop here for lunch and a ride, if you need a place to stay should be okay my wife and I have a couch and an extra room (small house). But otherwise I'd say go through to Idaho, and stop in Couer D'Elaine (sp...I don't try). The lake there is nice, and they have a nice casino there if you're wanting a day of AC and fun.

After that, I did it as a kid with my mom, but there's a route that goes through the corner of Montana and drops down into Wyoming for Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

My thoughts.

Richland (Tri-Cities) is a good stop in Washington! I know a guy with an FZ6 that also frequents this forum, his username starts with MUD.... :p

Have fun, I'm envious!

Has anyone heard from Happyker? How is she doing?

Thanks for checking on me :)

Got stuck in San Francisco for a bit longer. I expect to leave mid next week some time. Sadly I really dont think Im going to be able to afford such an ambitious trip back home so Ive been trying to figure out which route to take again. The three things I want to go through the most on the way back are Yellowstone, Montana and Denver.

Well if you are still planning on coming up to the Seattle area, let me know. I am sure I can show you a few fun roads around here. And I am sure there are some other Washingtonians that would be willing to do the same.

Yes I still plan on going to Seattle but pretty much only because I have 3 different friends I want to visit up there.... so I'm not sure how much free time I will have.

Ill let you know when I get there anyway so we can try and fit a ride in, I'm sure we can work something out :)

Actually scratch that, I very sadly cant afford to make it to Seattle and my rear tire will probably not make it the extra 1000 miles either. Plus now I cant get my cell phone to turn on as of yesterday morning :( The only way I can make it work is if anyone knows a way I can make some cash while I am up there. (Preferably bartending but Ill take anything).

Im thinking of this route home now but please feel free to help me tweak it. Detouring to Nashville depends on how much tread/cash I have left, Ill decide once I get closer: Curry Village Front Desk to Philadelphia, PA 19147 - Google Maps

Forgot to update this..... Figured I should let everyone know I made it safely back home as of Tuesday night. Its just a shame I had to pretty much rush back home.. and on top of that my phone (primary camera) stopped working so I got NO return trip pics. I went from San Fran to Yosemite, to Zion, then Bryce, then Denver then straight line home via 70 from there. Loved Yosemite, and the Nevada desert surprised me since I was nervous about it but ended up loving it, but I think Bryce might actually be my favorite.... and Colorado west of Denver was absolutely gorgeous with lots of fall colors. Definitely very sad that I didnt get any pics of either.

Next time I need to plan my finances better... and yes there WILL be a next time :) Im already staring at a map dreaming the next one up. My first will certainly not be my last....

I put somewhere around 11K or so miles on the bike during the trip (13K or so since I bought it, now putting over 40K on the bike) and had NO issues with the bike other than a Code 19 that pops up once in awhile but goes away if I turn it off and back on. (Correct me if Im wrong but as far as I can tell its related to the sensor that checks the kickstand/clutch/neutral. Every time I think its fixed and gone it comes back a few thousand miles later). Oh and I did get a flat tire in Cuba, MO towards the start of my trip which I got both plugged and patched and the tire (Pilot Road 3's) still managed to hang in the entire trip plus the 2k miles I had on them before leaving. Front tire actually has plenty of tread left but the rear I should really replace very soon.... Ill probably just replace them as a set however.

Ive been very lazy about going through and uploading pics but I will be doing it soon (I hope). I wont post a public link but if you want access just send me a message and Ill let you know when they are up.

Reality sucks lol I dont want to go back to work!
