My most prized Japanese motorcycle tool purchase is probably a set of T-handle hex keys.
The second is the largest of this set of impact sockets which works great with a 1/2" drive breaker bar to free the front axle from dealer over-torquing. I actually know of no other tool to do...
I tend to use Loctite where it was originally.. The cover bolts don't have threadlocker, but you might find some as colored threads where the rotor pickup bolts to the cover. The blue-strength stuff there should be sufficient.
I think I'd use gasket maker. I used Permatex Ultra Black around the rotor pickup wire plug doodad.. the original sealant seemed to be of the vulcanizing type as well. To be clear, the large gasket itself shouldn't require any sealant.
Awakening a dead thread -- apologies. Just wanted to share my impression of oil service after having adjusted my valve clearance. I never noticed on parts fiche before that there are no camshaft bearings for these engines. If the camshaft journal clearance is too large, and the camshaft journal...
Oh. And I forgot to address your concern about the intermittent nature of the noise. My bikes do that too -- the valves and lifters rotate during operation, and shrink and expand due to heating under different operation conditions.
Yes, the valvetrain is ticky, on my FZ6 and my R6 noticeable from idle to 5000RPM, which I would think would be particularly true on a low-mileage bike, as I understand the valve clearance is set up at the wide end of the spec to allow the gap to close up as the valves and seats wear.
I reasonably expect that the long, narrow, torque-tuned intake will always be the flow restriction on these guys. I don't expect that replacing the air filter with oiled cotton would require any changes, as my guess is that it wouldn't increase flow much. In any case, at least, if the bike...
Sitting in the sun, esp with a dark-colored tank, gas will evaporate, travel down the fuel tank vent tube, condense, and drip on the ground. Is it coming out the vent tube near where the swingarm meets the frame?
The FZ6 gearbox is very thocky, particulary when it comes to second gear from either direction. Try to shift with the engine speed between the gear you're leaving, and the gear you're headed into. This in my experience minimizes the "thock" on the gear engagement dogs. And YES, the clutch sounds...
I read somewhere, and I can't find the exact quote, that some folks make a practice of doing the idle sync procedure at 4,000RPM instead of the specified idle speed. After taking things apart to do my valve clearance adjustment, I'd like to share a couple of observations:
1) The idle air...
Hm.. while babying the bike might delay the valve clearance closing up due to less valve actuations and related face/seat wear, everything in the top end gets more oil at a few thousand RPM. :)
You might want to pick up a gasket for that cover if you intend to remove it.. The crankshaft sensor rotor and cam chain throw oil toward it. My gasket delaminated when I removed this cover to mess with the valve clearance, but i was able to successfully reuse it.
