Solved:
Finally traced the issue to my fuse box. No bad fuses BUT the wires underneath the fuse box had come loose and had to be pushed back into place with a small screwdriver. This fixed the issue with my instrument cluster and some issues I was having with the fuel pump. The bike is running...
No typo, that's what it was doing. I have not done any tests with the old RR. How do I test the stator?
Edit: Also, where are some ground connections that I can start checking?
I tested the battery with the volt meter but that was all I could get to last night. I'll have to do more this weekend.
Volts key on - 12.6V
At idle - 14.5-14.6V
(I don't have the tach to see what rpm I'm at but...) while revving - 13.9V
Alright today is the day. No more messing around. I'm going to make a checklist of info to give to y'all and I will run all of the tests today. I'm out of class at 12:20 and the rest of the afternoon will be dedicated to the bike.
I do want to clarify real quick that I am no longer having...
Bad news. I just installed the new RR unit and observed no change. The speedo did not come on at all except for maybe a little 20 or 30 second period while the bike was idling.
I'm trying not to let my frustration get the best of me but every time I feel like I've narrowed it down to the...
When I first got her she was looking pretty rough. Wires all over the place, mirrors broken, sh%tty cheap amazon headlight rigged up to the front with hose clamps, just really rough. She's been laid down a time or two, but I got a good deal on her. So far I've put in a new battery, replaced the...
Yes, plugged in, not bolted down. The PO just has the thing unbolted and dangling down in there.
I started the bike tonight when I got home (mostly just to enjoy the fact that it fires right up now) and saw that the speedo wasn't showing anything. I waited for 30 seconds or so to see if it...
I didn't ride the bike without it, more just unplugged and plugged right back in to observe the change. I won't do it anymore! Where am I measuring from when I'm testing this? Over the battery or into the speedo or?
Got it, there was a bracket missing. I ordered one on ebay so hopefully that helps with the issue.
I took the bike out for a quick ride around the neighborhood to celebrate the new starter and it ran great. No problems with the speedo the whole time. We'll see what happens as time goes on!
I'm so excited! The new starter motor made SO MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE. The bike starts right up every time now!
Also, I was able to replicate the issue with the speedo by unplugging the regulator rectifier and then plugging it back in. Where is that thing supposed to bolt up? I know it's supposed...
I do have the FSM and have been using it as a guide. I pulled the starter motor before seeing your replies and have the new one in. I tested the old one with the battery and it did not seem to be working correctly. (Sometimes it would spin, but not every time) but the new one spun every time I...
That's what I thought! It wouldn't make sense for the bike to be constantly spinning the starter motor. Something has to be loose somewhere. It's just going to be a matter of tracking it down.
Previously the gauge has worked fine without the engine running. This started right after I decided to put in the new battery box.
As far as making the repairs, I am mostly soldering the wires together and then using heat shrink insulation to cover the connection. All repairs go through the...
The bike has not been spinning over at all. That was what made me think the battery was bad. But I knew that when I put the new one in and it didn't fire right up that something else was going on.
I feel like i've checked the wires from the meter down a thousand times, I made sure that all...
Found the regulator rectifier under the tank. It's just sitting loosely under there. Shouldn't it be bolted up to something?
The plug and wires all look good going into it. My dad will be here tomorrow with the meter and I can start checking voltages on everything.
Also, how do I get the...
Sorry it took me so long to get back to y'all on this. I put in a brand new battery, fully charged, and had the same issue. The bike wouldn't start and I got no info from the speedo. My dad suggested that I try to move the starter around (like put the bike in gear and try to bump it a little) so...
Battery is totally dead. I just charged it all the way up and it's not strong enough to start the bike. I've connected all wires their proper counterparts and I'm still having the same issue with the speedo. The last time I got the bike started it was very slow to start and I had the current...
So the functions that are still...functioning... on the speedo are the neutral light, turn signal indicators, and the backlight (I'm not sure about the other lights). I checked today and the battery is totally dead, so I'm going to run that over to my motorsports place tomorrow to have it...
Alright so I repaired a place where there was a weird connection to no avail. Still no data. Other than that I haven't found any issues with the yellow/blue wire. I did, however find that the previous owner connected the red/green wire from the speedo to the red/white wire which goes back into...
