6751X + 3249Y = 26751
3249X + 6751Y = 23249

What is the value of both X and Y?

Pm sent - guessed it in my head - I'm at least 8 feet from paper.

But I'm PRETTY sure I'm right.

There is a trick :)
or maybe there isn't ;-)
or maybe there is :)

Ok, none of you showed me the workings :spank:

Add the equation to give: 10000X + 10000Y = 50000
Divide by 10000 to give: X + Y = 5
Subtract to give: 3502X - 3502Y = 3502
Divide by 3502 to give: X - Y = 1
Therefore: X = 3 and Y = 2

I started to show my work, but I made a mistake somewhere because I got to the end and didn't have integer answers (which didn't feel right), so I guessed and checked with numbers close to what I had and it worked.

Subtract to give: 3502X - 3502Y = 3502
Divide by 3502 to give: X - Y = 1
Therefore: X = 3 and Y = 2

I did it the hard way: multiplied first equation by 3249, muliplied second by 6751, subtracted to get that 35,020,000Y = 70,040,000, so Y = 2. Put 2 back in first equation for Y, so 6751X = 26571 - 6498 = 20253, solve for X = 3.
