On a recent expedition, three explorers got lost in the middle of the jungle with only a box full of apples to survive on.
In the middle of the night Mark woke up and decided to hide his share of the apples and hid a third, then fell asleep again.
Peter woke up shortly after and also decided to hide a third of the remaining apples and he also dozed back to sleep.
Finally, Fred woke up and seeing the others were asleep, took a third of what was left.
Of course none of the explorers knew of the other's antics, so, in the morning, they shared the remaining apples, each receiving sixteen.

How many apples were in the box originally?

PM answers please.

Well done guys

The most amazing thing about this question was Fred actually gave me a proper answer ,lol

PM sent. Why is it that I got the least amount of apples?

You slept too soundly and some how failed to notice that nearly half the apples disappeared between the time you closed your eyes and the time you hid your apples :)
