Front sprocket nut question

Soon i'll change the chain and sprockets. My bike is a 2005 S1 and as i read from the forum, these models had a sprocket nut issue recall. So may be i should buy a new bolt and washer. But when i look at the part numbers, 2005 and 2008 are different. Does it fit if i buy a 2008 nut and sprocket for my S1?

From my experience, part numbers change for various reasons. I would think the part is the same, just a different number. I don't think yamaha would change a thread pitch for a better nut. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in soon.

Same thread different locking mechanism.

EARLY:
The washer behind the nut is thinner and folds over the nut. The washer is tabbed to the shafts keyway to reduce the chances of the nut backing off.

LATE:
The locking mechanism is integrated into the nut. However, it must be staked properly and effectively to work.

Exhibit A: notice the flange is 'staked' into the keyway.

I have the older style washer/nut. Never had a problem with it.

I switched to 15T sprocket then back to stock sprocket then tried 17T for a short while, went back to 15T, spent a little more time with 16T on a long trip and finally now back with 15T sprocket full time.

with all those sprocket changes I used the same washer again and again just folding down a different piece of the washer each time.

Not recommending you do this but just sayin' if there was to be a problem I would probably have experienced it. the nut iself, as I recall, has nylon in it so that it can't thread itself off and then you have the safety washer as overkill.

I have the stock nut also with early type washer. I've been riding it for 15k miles without issues.
Is it different than the one subjected to Yamaha recall i don't know.

My '06 has the old style nut, but no recall. I have lost the front sprocket nut once, thankfully caught it before it damaged anything.

Here's the newer (07-09 model) front sprocket nut. As you can see, there is a fairly thin lip that sticks up.

As noted above, once its torqued down, just peen that edge down over the two "flats" of the output shaft. A little locktite wouldn't hurt anything. :thumbup:

Ive got the washer type and havent had any problems. I switched to a 17t front last summer and replaced the washer with a new washer; still no problems.

Thanks guys, I know this is an old post but it's answered my question perfectly. Got an 07 S2 and want to gear it down for Moto Gymkhana. Was worried there is no washer behind the nut but looking again it's the later type so all is well and worried no longer. This is my third spell of FZ6 ownership and I always get the help I need. :thumbup:
