my 7yr old on fz

This may not apply here but you'll hopefully see the relation. . .

When my daughter was 3mo old her mom set out the door saying I'm going to get her ears pierced. See ya in a couple hours. . .

Ah - NO, I don't think so. Let her age to point of making her on choice on things like that. Just because you think they'd look cute, that doesn't mean she wants holes in her head.
When my daughter went to school at age 6 and saw the other kids with ear rings she formed her own opinion. Around 6-1/2years old she asked for them and we talked about what you need to do to be responsible and how long it'll take to heal. . . blah blah blah. By next summer it was done, she choose to have holes in her head.

Long I know - the point is the stakes are bigger and they should have a say so knowing all of the consequences. IMO - when they understand the full spectrum of consequences and can mostly comprehend them (yes I'll use web photos and cripples to make a point; prego teens too), that's when I move down this path. . .

That's not to say my dad didn't throw me on the Triumph and tell me to hang on. He did. I was 6 or 7 and it was never on the highway that I recall. Been riding since i was 9 or so (dirt).

That is an excellent perspective FinalImpact, and one I share.

The amount of babies and young children I see with pierced ears disgusts me.

Having said that, with the bike, initially it was a case of letting him walk to school, by himself, or come on the bike with me on my way to work.

After 18mths or so, we finally hit the highway and we lived to tell the tale!

Cheers,
Rick

last summer I sat my children on the back of my bike riding around the garden doing kph, until I ran the battery flat. We all had a great blast. Ages 4 - 5 - 6 years. The garden is 1/4 acre of grass.
Certainly I won't bring them on the road until I can get the gear to fit them. Probably 9 / 10 years old.

I clearly recall being 4,5 and riding with the old man to go see my new baby brother at the hospital one night. I know that by that time i'd ridden quite a bit with him, it wasn't the first time.

My daughter has just turned 6, and loves the bike, the only problem is all the gear is WAY too big, we strap her up tight in it, and she only stays still for about 15-20 minutes, then you must stop. She holds onto straps on my jacket.

Rule was: can your feet touch the footpegs, and can you sit still?

Last ride she thought it would be nice to talk to me. The ONLY thing i heard, repeatedly, was "Faster daddy Faster!"

I've been debating this, too. I have a 7-year old daughter and a 10-year old son who are both dying to ride with me. My daughter will definitely have to wait--I think she's too young and way too scatterbrained to sit still on a ride. I think my son is ready for short, low-traffic rides, but I'm having a hell of a time finding gear for him.

Anyone have any suggestions for places to find youth-sized street gear?

Right on the money, IMHO!!!

My grandfather use to pick me up from grade school (8-10ish yrs old) on his Honda goldwing. But oh man, when my dad found out about it....:spank: I didnt care tho, it was my 20min of pure freedom:D

I think my dad was afraid because he had worked in an ER and saw what came in after motorcycle accidents and my bmx skills...Years later MX.

He was concerned when I bought the FZ last year, all I could tell him was "Dad, you just dont understand......."

I'd have to take exception with this. This is not comparing apples to apples IMO. Pierced ears (for babies, let's say) is a cultural thing, and reversible if and when the child becomes aware of it and decides against it.

Also, for my money, pierced ears are a small thing compared to the potential violence of a motorcycle wreck in terms of harm to a child.

*buckle up for a thread jack!*

What about circumcision? Surely no male baby would grant consent to be circumcised, right? But we (as a culture) decide that it's an acceptable risk/reward and it's pretty much automatic for male Western babies.

I always shake my head a bit when I see people riding with kids on the pilion seat. Then again, I live in Los Angeles, CA and you would expect this kind of reaction from a sensible person, living and driving in the insanity of L.A. traffic. Out in a more rural setting with safer conditions, I would be less likely to raise the proverbial eyebrows.

YMMV. Ride safe always, regardless!

P.S. - it's all relative. Which of the kids in these three images is probably likely to be safest, even when maximum velocity is considered?

Except Chemiker. I believe he did, in fact, consent to it, several hours after his own birth. :Flash:

I saw this in a Givi catalog that came with my bags. Thought it was relevant

GIVI S650 - Accessories for bikes/scooters

I haven't actually seen it for sale anywhere though but looks interesting....

I know that it shouldn't, but for some reason this little seat reminds me of a catapult. I guess any pillion seat is a catapult, if the front wheel suddenly ceases progressing forward!
