I passed my test in September last year after having a Yamaha R125 for 18 months. That had all sorts of bits added to it (Scorpion, screen, tail tidy and a few Probolt toys). However that was when I was a single guy but now I find myself with a great woman and a baby on the way :D

I still have the modding bug but it's hard to find the spare cash when it all has to go on baby stuff :(

The main reason I got the FZ6 was for the underseat exhaust and as much as I love the idea I hate the fact it's a big box hiding behind some plastic trim :banghead:

I can't afford a secondhand or new exhaust for the bike nor do I have the tools or experience to make one. This led to me thinking of other bikes that have dual underseat exhausts....

Like the Ducati 1098 :)

£43 and £10 p+p netted me a set of stock under
seat cans and straps. Should hopefully get them tomorrow or Monday. Then all I have to do is wait for the weather here in Scotland to warm up so I can get the bike and cans down to a specialist welding place to get a custom pipe and tail tidy made up.

Soon I'll be replacing these:

I also found this site: GUIDE: Stock Exhaust Baffles Removal Ducati 1098/848 - ducati.org forum | the home for ducati owners and enthusiasts

Which explains how to debaffle the stock 1098 exhausts so I'm tempted to have a go at that too.

Your license plate looks like a big wheels mud gaurd. That thing is huge!!!!

But it doesnt matter since your exhaust will be awesome

Nice. You wanna buy a fender eliminator and maybe smaller indicators to go with that mate. The R&G ones are nice or there are loads of cheap ones on Ebay from China.

Congratulations on the upcoming baby!

I was the same as you, excited to get my bike but HUGELY disappointed to find that the exhaust shroud was plastic. It's a vain thing to say, but it's the reason I got aftermarket exhaust, not even for the sound. Good luck getting those pipes fitted. Can't wait to see the finished product

Progress at last.

After a monumental a**e about with Royal Fail messing up the missed delivery slips I finally got them picked up at the start of last week.

I've spoken to a Powder coating firm and they will treat each exhaust for £15 if I decide to get them done.

The weather in Scotland is finally picking up and the forecast for next week is looking nice and mild so I'm gonna get the bike and exhausts over to the welders on Tuesday hopefully. I'm hoping it'll end up like a pair of slip ons so I can put the stock exhaust for the MOT and servicing stuff.

Looks like a great mod. I checked ebay for the exhaust and there are many of them with cheap prices.
Are they titanium?
Why do you want to powder coat them? They look nice.

If everything fits and it works well i would like to try this too.
But the welding process and making of Y pipe can be a little bit difficult.
An other issue can be the lengths of the Ducati tubes.
They may need to be shortened.

Keep us posted.

More progress has kind of been made.

Welding money ended up going on a new buggy for the baby so that'll have to wait till payday (next Wednesday).

In the meantime I finally got the chance to bust out the Drill and Dremel to pull the cans apart from the back and chop out the catalytic converters :D

Was a lot easier and quicker than expected.

To begin with I started by drilling of the rivet heads from the back of the cans:

IMG_20120223_194330.jpg

Before I could pull the end off I had to knock the rivets into the can (note my bodge job tools of choice, an allen key and a heavy chisel):

IMG_20120223_204156.jpg

Then it was just a case of brute forcing the back off:

IMG_20120223_194342.jpg

Here is the CAT:

IMG_20120223_194349.jpg

Now the fun job :D Busting out the Dremel and the spare cutting discs. I decided to cut it as far down as I could and ran the dremel around lighlty to mark a groove to cut into:

IMG_20120223_195949.jpg

Once I had cut through the cat all the way around I smashed it a few times with the chisel of destiny and off it popped:

IMG_20120223_201218.jpg

Now thats gone the exhaust gasses can flow a bit more clearly though the pipes and into the internal baffling system:

IMG_20120223_201210.jpg

IMG_20120223_211242.jpg

Then it was just a case of repeating the process again for can number 2:

IMG_20120223_211219.jpg

I just need to "borrow" the riveting tool from work for a night to get them all sealed up ready for fitting. Dying to hear how the bike will sound now :D Hope it was worth the hour and a bit I spent chopping them open tonight.

I still haven't got the things fitted yet.

So the welder I was told to go and see turned out to be a grade A 100% a**ehole. Was bitching about the job and me to another customer of his that knows me through work. So I liberated the cans from his workshop and told him to ram his £200 price where the sun doesn't shine.

I rang Scorpion UK last Tuesday and outlined my plans to them and asked if they would supply me with all the fittings for one of there exhaust kits but minus the cans and straps. So after paying £110 I got a lovely box containg all the fittings last Thursday but no link pipe :O Gave them a call on Friday morning and they dispatched it then. Just collected it from the local parcel place after work.

Cans and link pipe:

Fittings and pipe:

I was hoping to get away with simply cutting the Ducati pipes down a little but they are the same diameter as the link pipe and the angles are just no good at all. Gonna ring another welder in the morning and see if they can get the pipes off and reweld a slighly smaller diameter straight piece on instead.

Almost there folks! :p

Well I started it tonight.

You ever get that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you suddenly realise it's all gone wrong? Well I got it tonight :O

Loads of bolts were seized solid not surprising as the bike is an 04 so I had to Dremel a few out. The two Allen heads that hold the stock numberplate holder to the bracket will need replaced.

Those I can deal with. Whats freaking me out is just how much the cans will stick out unless I do some serious cutting! I'm gonna need to trim the link pipe down from the can end and trim the exhaust can pipes right down to stand a chance of making it look remotely sensible.

I did fire it up with the cans attached loosely though....

So gonna be worth it in the end!

I had a set of those from a friend last year and was gonna do the same thing but I don't have welding contacts. They were gonna stick out pretty far too. Then my friend passed, so now they are a shrine in my buddies bike shop. It's gonna sound wicked I can't wait for the vid.

I would try to find some dimensions online for the Leo Vinces or anpother aftermarket pipe setup for the fz6, go off of those when cutting the length of the pipes. The connector pipe attached to the mufflers is going to deffinately be shorter than what they currently are. I even think some after market pipes for the FZ6 have one pipe shorter than the other to keep from having a 90 degree bend in the connector pipe.

Good luck, I look forward to hearing some sound clips of the after!

Finally progress has been made!!

Spent 2 hours tonight trimming down the end can pipes and the link pipe with the use of a dremel and a borrowed hacksaw.

I forgot to put a pic of the re-welded end pipes:

IMG_20120315_135025.jpg

So I got the cans re-riveted last Thursday and I stripped the bike down. Last night I prepped and measured the cans, pipes and link pipe to see if I would need to strip and shorten the Ducati cans.

After cutting the pipes and mock fitting I decided that if I dont like the long cans that can be a job for another time.

So here are the Ducati cans fitted to the FZ6:

Here are a few pics with the grab rails and seat roughly in position to give an idea on the length of the cans:
