Overheating, misfiring, bog down.

Hello to anyone reading this, thank you for taking the time to do so. My 2004 fz6 has had power cutting issues recently where is bogs down and misfires after I ride it hard. A nice gentleman gave me advice on a previous post and I've checked all of what he mentioned minus the ignition coils, I haven't checked them with my ohms meter yet. Is it possible its just heat soak as its been hot out where I am recently? Does anyone know of a better radiator/fan replacement for this bike that would work better? Also any advice on the kill switch, my killswitch on the bike is super sensitive and if I even graze it with my finger it shuts the bike off. Any recommendations are welcome.

If you disassemble your throttle quadrant you will gain access to the copper contacts in the kill switch. Clean these up with some Scotchbrite and it should solve that problem.

Regarding the coils - if you are getting a misfire and bogging - especially after the bike has warmed up - it's a good indication that one or both coils have failed. The only way to know for sure is to check the resistance of the primary and secondary coils.

Overheating. The OEM radiator and fan work fine on the FZ6. The question is your system working as designed? Have you confirmed that your fan turns on when the bike gets hot? If it doesn't come on at all, have you checked the 20A fuse? What temperature does the fan come on? There are a few diagnostics that you can run...but lets start with the basics. Oh, and a failed radiator cap can cause the bike to overheat.
 
Mate I can't tell you how much I appreciate the advice! The temp Guage doesn't show a specific number on mine but at 3-4 bars it starts to act up. It doesn't really do anything like this if I'm just riding casual at least to my knowledge.
 
The fan should cut in at 100 degrees centigrade which is 4 bars on the gauge.

First thing I'd try is to unplug the fan connector from the loom and feed 12V directly to it and see if it runs ok. If it does, you may have a faulty coolant temperature sensor.
 
When you say that “at 3 to 4 bars it starts to act up” are you referring to the misfire or does the bike overheat? What makes you think that the bike is overheating? What are the symptoms?

It starts to misfire, I didn't know if it was a result of the heat or not. If I ride the bike super tame it doesn't give me trouble but if I get on it it sputters and cuts its like its fighting to rev. I did the diagnostic mode and my throttle sensor was fine, my radiator fan was fine, same with my fuel pump so its making me think it either the ignition coils or the kill switch I can clean the switch and test it tomorrow.
 
That red kill switch should NOT be that sensitive.

You really shouldn't even be using it un-less an emergency. It's a known weak spot.

Clean that as Gary said, or by-pass it.

So I messed up lol, I took apart the killswitch and accidentally lost the little ball bearing. So I imagine I'm gonna have to bypass it for now. Do you have any idea how to do that? I have to be riding it on Saturday for a final M test. I looked online for ball bearings but nothing would come in time.
 
I did it thanks again so much animos I really do appreciate all the help! I've been learning a lot! (Ps the bike is running great now I'm so happy! I forgot how good this bike felt!)

Apparently lol I just took it out and red lined it from lower rpm and it ran perfectly. Even when I turn the bike on the fuel pump primes longer than it did with the killswitch attached.

Excellent..

And it makes sense, with the switch going "in and out", it'd shut down the fuel pump too....

The kill switch has caused more issues, ESPECIALLY WHEN USED often than just about
every other thing I've seen over 16 years..


IE; Don't use it except for emergencies... You have a key, or when stopped(and wanting to kill the engine),
just flip down the side stand..
