Pearl Harbor, 69 years ago today

Sixty-nine years ago, on December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack against the United States naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 350 Japanese aircraft attacked in two waves, strafing, dropping bombs and torpedoes. Four U.S. Navy battleships were sunk, four other battleships were damaged, and eight other ships were either sank or damaged. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed, 2,402 personnel were killed and 1,282 were wounded. The following day, the United States declared war on Japan, officially entering World War II. This year's 69th anniversary coincides with the dedication of a new $56 million Pearl Harbor visitors center. Collected here are photos from that infamous day. (34 photos total)

It really brings to life what happened that day to most of us who were born many years after the event occurred. It was that era's September 11th

+1 I was there in 2002, also did a tour of the USS Missouri which now stands guard over the Arizona. On the deck of the Mighty Mo is where the formal surrender of the Japanese government took place.
Amazing to think about where it started and ended is in one place now. On the deck in the very spot of the surrender is a display case with replica documents of that event. While I was there a couple young American Officers were giving a couple Japanese Officers a tour of the ship. It was a very surreal moment for me as I put this into perspective- two enemies now allies. Something I will never forget.
If you ever get a chance to go to Pearl Harbor it will be an experience you always remember.

There was a total of 60 Japanese ships that participated in the attach on Pearl Harbor. Of those 60 ships 57 were sunk before the end of the war. I don't think it matters whether an American was born before or after Pearl Harbor, Pearl Harbor lives in the psyche of all Americans and always will.

Lets not forget the surprise attacks by the Japanese on Darwin, Australia starting on FEB 19, 1942. I don't think a lot of Americans today even realize that Australia was bombed by the Japanese during WWII. Darwin was attacked over 100 times compared to two attacks on Pearl Harbor.

Absolutely a global change that day.

It was this day in 1982, December 7th, that I stood and took the oath as a new enlistee in the U.S. Army. It was with the thought of all those that died that day when I spoke the words.

Lets not forget the surprise attacks by the Japanese on Darwin, Australia starting on FEB 19, 1942. I don't think a lot of Americans today even realize that Australia was bombed by the Japanese during WWII. Darwin was attacked over 100 times compared to two attacks on Pearl Harbor.

My Dad was in Darwin when they attacked,they only time he ever spoke to me about it was to say that it scared him witless.

Two midget subs got into Sydney harbour as well !
