FZ6 Idle Keeps getting Un-Adjusted (high variations idle)

Hello to everyone,

I'm new to the forum, and I actually just got the bike 10 days ago. I have the 2006 FZ6 Fazer. I bought it used with only 22.000 km and I'm really happy with it.

Anyway, I have a problem with my idle. I adjusted the idle screw when I got the bike, and set it to ~1200 rpm (jumping up and down +-60 rpm)

Since then, the idle keeps getting un adjusted. One day, it may fell down to 950 rpm, another day It may be 1400 rpm.

The only modifications the bike has is an K&N air filter, nothing else.

The ECU diagnosis from the speedometer doesn't show any errors at all.

Any ideas?
Sorry if there is already an answer for this issue, I couldn't find it.

I forgot to mention, I checked the TPS from the diag Menu, it shows 16 on closed throttle and 100 on fully opened throttle. I've checked several times so this is probably not the issue. Thanks again tho!

What I was thinking is that maybe I need a TB Sync? Could it cause such a problem?

Also I should mention: When I bought the bike, I chaged sparkplugs, oil & oil filter, air filter,coolant, cleaned the intake with carb cleaner, and run several tanks with injector cleaners.

Also check the throttle body boots and all vacuum lines for a possible vacuum leak. When was the last time the K n N was serviced? An over oiled K n N can cause problems. Pull the filter to see if the idle becomes stable. When you changed the filter was it to a paper type?

I put a brand new K&N air filter when I purchased the bike , 10 days and 800 km ago. Before that, the bike had the stock paper air filter, but I don't know how the idle was with that.

Could you please explain where are exactly the vaccum lines on the FZ6?
I had a similar issue (not starting actually) on my Shiver 750 and It was a vaccum issue on the air - flow sensor.
So I think this is worth checking as well.

Finally, is the a list of all affected VIN Numbers so I can check if my bike is affected?

Here's the site to put in your VIN but the '06 model doesn't show a re-call for the TPS, the earlier models do:


Also, there's some vacuum lines at the front of the throttle bodies, 2 on each side, used for doing a TB sync. They'll be poking out a little on each side of the TB's, one on each side should have a white paint marking on them. Seeing them is simply by lifting the tank up. Accessing the entire line involves some more digging... With that said, each of those 4 lines should be plugged up un-less performing a sync..

Here's a link showing an exploded view of the area you might look at. You"ll need to pull the air box assembly to inspect this area. Any line including the throttle body mount(parts 1 and 2 on the diagram) on the engine side of the throttle are


Look at parts number 2 on this second link as well as 22,19,12,23 and any possible associated parts the may allow an air leak.

Hello again guys!

Sorry for my late reply, I had a lot going on and didn't have the opportunity to check the bike.

Anyway, here are my news:

1) I went to my local Yamaha Dealer with my VIN, and they say the recall on the TPS is no longer supported.
They didn't clarify wether my specific VIN was affected, but stated that almost all 2006 models had this issue.

The cost for the new part is 150€ which is not minimal, therefore I'm not able to just buy it unless I'm sure is problematic.

So how can I confirm if the issue is with the TPS? As I mentioned before, through the diag system it shows normal values, and bike runs ok except from idle.

2) I did a TB sync with DIY tools (corona bottle method, I shaw it online and made the tool with hoses and 2T oil)

The TB was way out of sync, the 2,3 and 4 was set too high. Anyway I managed to sync them eventually.
The results are: better throttle response, less(smoother) engine braking when I leave the throttle on downhills, bike runs smoother on low rpm AND constant throttle (it used to do some "kicks" while cruising on ~3/4k rpm.
HOWEVER: idle rpm problem still not solved
3) checked all the hoses you guys mentioned from above the air filter, but couldn't find any leaks.
I didn't remove the air filter to check the other hoses though...

Anyway, this is just and update for anyone interested, if you got any other ideas let me know!

Thank you for the update.
The TPS was a recall for the 2005 model. Not the 2006. Some countries use the date the vehicle is first registered as the year of the bike so maybe that's why the Yamaha guy said 2006 had the recall problem.
I think we've discussed the different possibilities of noise being a factor on the TPS where the Ohms test shows good but TPS can still make noise the the ECU interprets and commits a solution to fuel adjustment. See if you can get the year the bike was manufactured. A picture would tell us because there were certain color schemes for years.
Also keep in mind that the TPS is a part that gets a lot of wear and can fail on any year bike. Not just the recalled bikes.

At idle I'm thinking it's another issue but .......

What is this other issue you're thinking of?

That's a 2005. IT could have a bad TPS that was in the recall but was never taken in. Another thing that can cause funny idle behavior is a failing kill switch. Would not hurt to make a jumper to bypass the kill switch to see if the intermittent idle calms down.
