6000 Mile Service

Hi Guys,

Just bought my first big bike, a 2007 S2 Fazer (pics when at home, promise!). It's about to reach 6,000 miles and I'd rather service the bike myself if it's not too difficult! I have plenty of tools, and changed oil in my YBR125 when I had that, but I'm by no means a mechanical wizard trust me!

So, where do I start with the FZ6 S2 6000 mile service? Can anyone point me in the direction of the correct oil and filter (is this OK to buy and recommended: Yamaha FZ6 Fazer S2 Half Faired No ABS 2008 Act-Evo 10w40 Oil and Filter | eBay ?) and ideally a link to coolant to buy as well. Anything else I need? I assume spark plugs don't need doing at this early stage.

Any advice much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!!! :welcome: Congrates, you got the best year!


That link with the oil and filter should be fine. Make sure you check the level on the center stand. Don't torque the drain plug beyond 20 lbs, (manual states 30ft lbs which is too high). Good and snug if you don't have a torque wrench.

As for the coolant, I use Prestone pre-mixed 50/50 (about $10.00 US per gallon). Also flush out/dump the overflow tank (located at the front of the engine). A quick tip, instead of removing the small drain plug at the water pump, just pull the lower hose clamp/hose where it attaches to the water pump.

A good cleaning and lube of the chain (and adjustment if needed-approx "2" total up and down play)

Lubing the clutch cable will make the pull considerably easier (if it hasn't been done recently).

Keep and eye on the tires for age, wear, pressure, etc too.

If the bikes running good, I wouldn't touch the spark plugs.

When I've done my own servicing I've hired a work bench at OMC in Wandsworth, they have all the tools but you'll need to take all the parts you need though.
The bonus is the main mechanic Matt is always on hand to help out and advise what needs doing. He's a top bloke.

I'm using either K&N oil filters or HF oil filters. HF requires oil filter wrench while K&N have 14mm (or so) socket on top of filter so you can use proper size wrench rather than special one.

Definitly NOT ON THE SIDE STAND... If you don't have a centerstand, you can check it on level ground BUT held straight up and down. :thumbup:


With that said, I have the oil set at the high point as directed by the manual(on the CC).

Now, I park the bike in my garage, in the same, level spot all the time. I know, that where it sits, dead cold, on the side stand, the dip stick will show about 1/4-1/3 up from the bottom mark. Unless doing an oil change, or its hot/been moved, etc, I just check it "cold, in its spot" (basically sitting overnight).

Pricey, you don't say. $200 is a lot to pay for an oil filter considering you only change oil filter max 2 times a year. You can buy a oil filter at Walmart for $3 which is highly rated. I didn't pay $200 for it years ago. It was over $100.00.

I also run full synthethic oil too. Do I have to? No, of course not but I want all the protection I can possibly get.

Just reading the spec's (FAQ's), the oil flow superiority, filtering, design, cooling, etc, its worth it to me just for the life of the engine. Its not just about the oil filter, its about extending the life of the engine. If my timing chain, CCT, etc, last longer than an engine with a Walmart filter on it, its paid for itself.




My FZ is one of the quietest (not exhaust wise) non "ticky" engines. It'll easily power wheelie in first and second with stock gearing but I do keep everything up to snuff/synced, brake seals newish/bleed/clean, etc...

It is by far my favorite bike which I plan on keeping indefinitly.. :thumbup:

While I personally would not spend that much on an oil filter I must say that is one of the coolest oil filters I have seen. Looks great with the black frame:thumbup:

I've been wrenching on bikes and other gas powered machines since I was 12, 43 YEARS...

My first 1989 KLR 250 got 73,000 street miles out of it before I sold it, so I have just a tad of experiance. Maybe I am indeed, mis-informed, as I didn't get 100,000 miles out of it before I sold it.. The red 2005 KLR 250 28,000 + miles on it before I sold that for the FZ.

Using your math, two filter changes per year= $24.00 (with a K&N filter)

So far I have over 3.5 years or 7 oil changes/filters since 2010 which = $84.00 in filter costs.

Two more years of oil changes/filter costs, (4 x $12.00=$48.00)

$84.00 + $48.00 = $132.00, about what I paid for the filter, and its paid for itself in 2 more years...

Thats NOT counting the additional cooling, flow, performance, just $..
