change in bike character after 12k - 16k service

After having my 15,000 mile service (late 12k one) the bike has come back feeling quite diffferent….. No very different and im not sure if I like it

Before I took it in the bike was feeling very free and would rev up very very quickly to the 12k rpm range with matching acceleration.


Now after the service which I was told the following had been done:

New pads all around. (ive checked and there not binding)
New spark plugs
New air filter
Oil change
New brake fluid
New coolant.


When I first got the bike back, I had to take it stright back as the engine would nt rev and I was going everywhere at 100% throttle to get any power. The guys at the shop had a look and fixed it seems as though they caught an air pipe or vacum pipe? When re fixing the tank on.


Anyway now the bike pulls well, accelerates well and seems better. Its just that there seems to be way more pull per gear, more like a v-twin ??? I seem to be staying in gears a lot longer as ive noticed that the gears are reaching higher speeds at lower revs and that theres more torque in higher gears at lower revs? (sure im going mad!)

But I think ive lost some top end power as I don’t think I get the screaming rush that I did after 8k rpm as the power seems to be spread out over the range now….. Its very strange indeed.



Anyone else experienced the same on a 12 or 16k service?

Maybe your speedometer is more off than before?

Put a GPS on and determine the actual speed.

It's unfortunate they didn't test ride it thoroughly before giving it back and you had to come back to get them to fix it. It is fortunate that they fixed it.

Maybe different oil? maybe chain is now aligned better? maybe tire pressures are better? the good news is your bike feels better after the service.

they might have done a throtle body balance, that will change the feel of the power

I know this sounds like a lecture, but the complaints that you cite are EXACTLY why I'm reticient to have others work on my bike. Only if I have a warranty issue (5 year) will I bring it in. Otherwise, all the maintenance stuff I consult my hard copy Yamaha manual and it's DIY. I can't imagine why doing what they did would affect performance other than a little smoother operation with the new plugs and possibly the new air filter if you ride in real dusty conditions. It's gotta suck: you bring in your bike for maintenance thinking that this should mean continued perfect operation only to get it back in poor running operation.

I never have taken any of my cars or bike in for a service since 2002 when a garage dropped my car of a 4 post ramp and handed me a £1700 repair bill!!! I remember been escorted from the premises until I paid for it. which resulted in me (cough cough) extracting my car key from a group of garage workers and taking my car before the neenaa neenaa sirens lol :Flip:


The only reason I take my bike in to the grage for servicing is to keep the unlimited milage warrantee and it annoys me because im always telling them what they have done wrong and how they should do it lol

These things are very subjective and it sounds like the bike is smoother and you'd prefer it less so. I would be interested to know if the fuel consumption has changed as this is a more objective measure of change.

Can you tell us which dealer this was at as it sounds like they never road tested after the service.:disapprove:

I suppose that’s correct


The bike is feeling smoother and tighter which is good but I just don’t seem to get the top end rush now that it had before the service, which I really did like. I think this is just because the bikes power seems to be smoother like you say. Is it possible that the more the engine runs in the smaller the 6k power dip gets?? hence smoothing out the power and reducing that top end rush.


And yes they did confirm that they originally took it for a test ride then came back to the garage altered a few things and then didn’t re-test ride the bike :spank:

They dropped the car and gave you a bill for the repairs!? Now that takes balls.

i didnt pay it !!! no way and yes i did have a small fit of rage when they told me i couldnt have my car back.

and the manager played the big i am with his employees behind him!

i must say i was greatful for my bouncer training back then:thumbup: and that was in my younger years.

funnily enough i had good service from there since lol. not that i have taken my car there but my girlfriend had a problem with them charging twice the quote for a job. but i took the original quote paperwork in and very good service they dropped the extra off stright away.

Mine felt very wrong after a big service when I got it back. Seemed strangled somehow and restricted in a way.

It turned out to be a failing TPS which may have been pre-empted by something they did to the throttle.

What year is your bike and have you had the TPS recall done?

my bike is a 2009

which i thought didnt have the tps problems but i will check it out now
