Dangerous or not?

Do you think it's dangerous to listen to ipod/mp4 player while riding?

S.A. is everything on a bike. At 60 mph there is so much wind noise I cant hear DODO any way. Even semis are right on you before you hear them on the highway. So my eyes are constantly working overtime and if someone sneaks up on me its just a reminder that I'm not paying close enough attention. I don't ride in the city much and when i do it scares the hell out of me so i never relax in the city. No mater where you are, when your riding your eyes are going to tell you way more than your ears ever will. My cage is a lincoln and it has a great stereo (JBL premium sound package) and i listen to it. Even at a reasonable volume if I pull out in front of someone and they honk there horn will I hear it in time to prevent them from hitting me? I think not. So the answer is DON'T PULL OUT WITHOUT LOOKING! right? If I was flying a fighter jet do you think I would HEAR the missal before it blew my BUT out of the sky? HA!

All that said, Yes I do sometimes listen to music when I ride and It can affect your concentration and that ant good. But I probably wont stop unless it hurts me, or kills me, then I'll stop.:D
 
Looks like everyone's getting quite agitated so I'll post my thruppence.

I will use my mp3 whilst on a long journey. Motorways are so boring. I hate sitting behind cars. Biking in itself is not boring but I get bored easily. Music calms me down and keeps me at a sensible speed and generally chills me out and stops me from filtering between lanes 2 and 3 at 100mph which I what I generally do on the motorway. Not a valid argument for most people I know but everyone's an individual.

Now I know you can pick this to pieces and accuse me of all sorts but, hey life is for living. I have no intention of doing anything that would cause me harm. 600 people die on motorcycles in the UK every year and I won't be one of them as I stay alert ALL the time I am on my bike. MP3 or not.

Can I just say I am quite offended by a previous statement on this thread. Celine Dion should not ever be mentioned on the FZ6 forum. Come on guys (and gals) I thought we had more taste....:confused:

that was a really detailed article (hard to read while watching TV). The earplug I use have a 33 noise reduction rating (NRR). I was thinking that the noise isolating earbuds have a NRR of about 15. Based on that article, the actual number may be closer to 12 and 6 respectively (which is still better than nothing). I know that now I will pay more attention to getter a proper fit. Thanks for posting it!
 
I've looked at it this way for years, as long as you truly believe everyone on the road, including others riders, is out to kill you you'll be fine and that iPod or MP3 or CB or in dash stereo or intercom or two-way isn't going to make it any better or worse than it already is if they are used properly.

Now, as to Celine Dion, marvelous 5 octave voice and an excellent performer. AC/DC only wishes they had her talent and money.....

well any respect I had for your judgement--- which due to your relationship to the IRS---- was little to begin with just went out the window

she is an ugly Canadian with a stale, washed up lounge act in Vegas not to mention she is married to someone older than you are.:p

And this has absolutely squat to do with her music. She is arguably one of the biggest selling female artists of all time with a list of awards to go along with it. Her private life, if there is such a thing, isn't in question where her music is. Therefore, I would consider the strength of your argument before comparing her music to any other individual singer or group for that matter as there are a limited few that could even come close to her musical achievements, which I might add include 2 Academy Awards, 5 Grammy Awards, 11 World Music Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 7 Billboard Music Awards, 21 Juno Awards, 38 Felix Awards and 3 Golden Globe Awards.

As to the comment about my relationship with the IRS, you don't even want to go there. I would however be willing to entertain anything you may be hiding in your last six tax returns....snicker, snicker

:D I must say I'm intrigued by Americans arguing over Celine Dion, who most Canadians probably don't even know is Canadian. Well, she's Quebecois, actually, and they don't like her either.

I purchased a set of TORK XPRO helmet speakers yesterday, and they fit perfectly into my Shoei RF1000 helmet's "ear holes" in the padding. The fit so well that I don't even need to use either the supplied velcro or double-sided tape. They do press ever-so-slight against my ears, but not so much as to be uncomfortable or distracting. The sound quality is quite startling...the bass reproduction is excellent, considering that the speakers are just up against my ear, rather than inside. Outside sound is easy to hear, btw....even with earplugs in.
The speakers come with an inline volume control that is a great idea. If I find music does indeed distract me from the job at hand (riding a motorcycle), then I will still use them for a GPS.
I won't be able to actually road test the set up for another couple of months, but when I do, I'll report back. :)

Have you tried them on the bike whilst reving the engine, arn't you just tempted to take her out for five minutes? Let us know. Your right though, I didn't think that ear plugs would lead to discusing the musical merits of certain artists and then un-covering her number one fan Havblue lol. BTW I think she is a very talented artist, record sales and bank balances don't lie.

i ordered the Tork Speakers... like the sound ==== too tight for my big head

I used the inline volume control with my Ipod though and like it ALOT... simply like at a light if I wanted to chat with buddy ... easily operated with gloves on too.

hoping I can use the speakers in my ski helmet (buying one soon)
 
Ha! HavBlue works for the IRS! I didn't know that...that cracks me up...Hav, I'm a tax consultant for one of the big accounting firms :) I thought about pursuing a position as an IRS Special Agent for a while but went public instead....very interesting.
