FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

Well tonight i stripped the bike...well, the back half of it anyway...

Removed Subframe, rear shock, Fuel tank, bellypan, exhaust headers, mid pipe, Power Commander, Speedohealer...

Mid pipe joins the end cans at the exhaust specialist tomorrow, to have the cat removed for ceramic coating on the inside, as well as out.

Once the cat is removed, the headers, mid pipe, and TB's connector pipe go to be ceramic coated silver...i decided this today, after seeing how poorly JayJay's black ceramic coated forks have held up....not well, nothing like the silver ceramic headed coaters on my other FZ6! Will have all this back by next Friday!

The Bellypan will join everythning else that is at the paint shop, and get painted gloss black to match the rest of the bike...am also sending the FE, the steering stop, all the rear seat unit mounting brackets, and the headlight fork clamps, all to be painted in satin black!

Now i have to get down to the business of sorting out the new mounting of all the electrical looms that previously sat under the 2 side pods on the FZ6...these will now reside under the seat, inside the box that supports the riders seat. This is going to take some serious time to get it all neat, and easily accesible...

Whilst i have the rear shock out of the bike, i will get it serviced, and i will change the spring to one that better suits my weight...

At the moment, the bike will be sitting on 2 race stands, and a car jack till at least next friday....which will also give me a chance to give all the bits you cant normally get at when the bike is on the road, and give everything a real good clean, lube, etc, etc...

So, hopefully by next Friday i can start to rebuild the bike, and hopefully have it finished by the following Friday, just in time to ride it over to PI for the Moto GP!

I know this, the bike will lose quite a bit of weight once this lot of mods is all done...am hoping for about a 5-6kg reduction...with lighter seat unit, shorter exhaust, modified sub frame, a truckload less bolts, integrated tail light & indicator's...

Bike is going to look "bonkers" when it's done!

Anyway, that's my update....

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

This is really cool. I've been wanting to go the stealth route but I have the 2005 bluish-grey model and I don't really know how well it would accent the bike's paint. I have been considering painting the bike black but I'm not sure how the process works or how much it will cost, or even how it would contrast with the silver frame.

Are you just taking parts off and having them powder coated? How much is this project running you? I'm almost at the point where I'm considering a second job literally only for FZ mods...

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

What color should i get the exhaust ceramic coated in....black, or silver...the only two options, other than white, and that's just Fugly!

Remembering, the theme of the bike is black and silver (or polished, or chrome), with the dominant color on the bike being black!...

BLACK!!!!! I love black! It goes with everything don't ya know! ;)

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

The black pipes do look nice! Looking forward to seeing more of your project.

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

the headlights are the 1 you bought from a fellow rider here? bike looking very good! how about powder coating the fork cap as well? :)

Yes, i bought the headlight second hand from Mav, a fellow forum member, as i bought it satill a bit scuffed from Mav's accident, it was always going to need a paint, if anything to colour match it to the rest of the bike.

As for powdercoating the fork caps, i prefer the contrast of the silver against the black...i will be changing the steering head nut though...plain billet valtermoto head nut has been ordered.

this is a pretty extensive project...here's the list of things that i have purchased, had to modify, or get painted!

Purchased!
1. Ripper Mask Headlight
2. Second hand rear sub-frame
3. Single seat Unit, as part of FZ6 Cup bike package.
4. Custom Billet top clamp
5. FZ1 smoked LED integrated tail light/rear indicators.
6. Various electrical connectors.

Modified, and, or fabricated.
1. Rear Sub frame, mostly chopping off the bits that are not required anymore...like the passenger footpeg hangers! :D
2. Rear seat Unit, including fitting the tail light. Thanks Mikey!
3. tail light bracket. Thanks Mikey!
4. Fender eliminator
5. headlight mounting brackets.
6. Custom billet top clamp....was'nt an exact fit! Thanks Mikey!
7. Seat pad.
8. Exhaust end cans cut down by 85mm
9. Mid pipe...removal of Cat.
10. Headers, Mid pipe, and rear connector pipe...all ceramic coated silver, inside and out.
11. Exhaust hanger brackets, positional change, as with FE....which has been bought forward by 65mm.
12. Moving of all electrical bits and pieces from side of sub-frame, to their new home under the seat....bit of trickery required here! Thanks Mikey!
13. Relocating Power Commander to under the petrol tank.
14. Fabrication of a new sub frame underside...to protect electrics under the seat....as original OEM FZ6 underseat, sub frame tray is now outta there!

Painted...everything in 2 pack!
1. Seat Unit...from pink to gloss black
2. Bellypan...from CF lookalike to gloss black
3. Headlight unit...from satin black to gloss black.
4. Fender eliminator...from satin black to FZ6 frame colour (satin balack/greyish sorta colour!)
5. Steering Stop...from flat black to FZ6 frame colour (satin balack/greyish sorta colour!)
6. Headlight mounting brackets.....FZ6 frame colour (satin balack/greyish sorta colour!)
7. Rear subframe...FZ6 frame colour!

So as you can see, it's a big job! Lots of hours in the workshop so far, with a fair bit of help from Mikey (Ozzieboy).

The cost is rather crazy, but i am doing the job properly, no skimping, or glossing over things that could be left...Paint & bodywork, is over $1000 just for starters...

Here's how my bike looks right now!

Lol! Yes, it is a bit like that, but it gives me a chance to do a bit of cleaning!

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

With a large amount of help from Mikey (Ozzieboy), tonight we made a template for the sub-frame under-tray, is very neat, and very well hidden by exhaust, & rear shock....

Now the template is off to the shop tomorrow so it can be fabricated into a part of the sub-frame, will be made of Aluminium, and have a heat shield on the underside...the top will be painted the same colour as the sub frame.

this will help keep all the electrical stuff, that will now reside under the front of the seat nice and safe from rocks, rubble, dust, dirt, and most probably not too much rain.

This was the last piece in the "puzzle" for this part of the mods, now we just have to wait for all the parts sent off for fabrication, painting, etc, to come back from the respective shops i have sent them out to, and then fit it all back together...

A few new electrical connectors will be used...changing everything from individual connectors, to block connector's...so much nicer!

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

Well, as i posted in a seperate thread, i have the Two Brothers shortened end cans back from the Exhaust guru, the rest of the stuff should now be ready on Tuesday & Wednesday.

Ordered new Titanium Bolts for the Sub Frame mounts, seat mount, brake caliper mounts, and the Top Yoke nut last night....freakin expensive, but half the weight of stainless, and just a bit more of the bike with titanium fasteners! The Titanium nuts & bolts should be here by Wednesday, just in time for the re-build on thursday...

At this point i have a strong desire to ride the bike over to PI next Friday...just in time for the Moto GP next weekend!

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

Update time! Was expecting to be putting the bike back together from today, but the guy who is painting all the bits and pieces, and modifying the sub frame, telling me that he would not have everything ready today, and as he is leaving to go to Phillip Island for the Moto GP today, that it would not be ready till about the middle of next week....i knew he was going to PI today, and we both knew that it might be a struggle to get everything done before he left! oh well, thems the breaks, i would rather not have everything back today, if the job was to be rushed....so i will wait patiently, and enjoy watching the Moto GP from home this weekend.

But there is more news, the other night i purchased a set of Radial brake caliper mounts to be used with the standard FZ6 forks, and as such, will be mounting a set of Radial R6 brake calipers to the bike as well...I bought these from the same guy in Italy, that i bought the Billet top clamp from....Igor at Gaass! special products....Igor's parts are extremely high quality, and make a great addition to my bike...here's how the front brake calipers will look now..

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

Oh, and here are the brake calipers i just bought to go on the end of these adaptors...got them from the USA for an absolute bargain price...

They come with as new pads, and the original R6 brake lines, which aint really much use to me...but the brake pads are a bonus! saves me big dollars!

Here's a few pic's of the calipers i am talking about..in absolute "mint" condition!!!

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

h, by the way, if people are wondering what the back half of the bike is going to look like, it's going to look a little like this...

View attachment 31750

Except, it will be a bit "cleaner", in that passenger footpeg mounts will be gone, the under seat box will be gone...and it will have a set of twin pipes, instead of the GYTR single pipe...although i do have a single GYTR pipe i could fit...sounds gnarly too!

re: FZ6 "Black project"! Now with Spy Video!

If only I had the $$$ and time I would do this all Winter... Never hurts too look down the road later. Besides after your done, I can check out your write up on it lol.
