FZ6 S1 vs S2

Hi guys,
Im new here and trying to buy a FZ6 fazer. Im looking into the following bike: https://www.autoscout24.nl/aanbod/y...ance_adjustment=organic&boosting_product=none

Which is a 2009 ABS. I did some research into the S1 and S2, and almost everywhere they're saying 2004-2006 S1 and 2007 onwards S2. I also read some discussions telling there are still some S1 versions in 2007 en 2008, but not any later. Now on the bike im looking at, i can see on the pictures a dash and windscreen that looks like S1, also the rest of the bikes look like S1. Do you guys know if there were still S1s in 2009? Or is there someting else going on?

When i check the license plate on a dutch website: https://ovi.rdw.nl/ (plate 47-ML-KR) I can see indeed that the first date of regestration is in 2009. It got imported to netherlands in 2020 and this guy is the guy that is selling the bike.

There is 25000 km on the bike now (2026) and the owner emailed me that he did a valve clearence check at 23000km (2023) already, isn't that also quite early?
He can provide maintenance info of the last years, but not from 2020 and earlier (so before it was imported).

It looks like a good deal to me, im going to test drive it in a couple of days. Sometimes i feel like im a bit cautious and insecure, so i would like to hear your opinions on this.

Maybe good to add that Im 25, its my first bike. Also one of the reasons i was looking for one with ABS.

In some countries the listing of the year of the bike is the year it was first registered with the motor vehicle division in that country.
S1 was manufactured 2004 to 2006. S2 was manufactured 2007 to 2009.

What happens for the versions/year depends on the market it was built for. You said it was imported, what was it's original country it was sold in?
The VIN number can be looked up to tell you the actual date of manufacture.

Im not sure what country its from, i know that in the netherlands its often importee from germany. I'll try to write down the VIN this saturday when im going for a test ride. Any tips on where to find the VIN? Steering head pipe?

Also there are different components like the swing arm, sub frame, front brake calipers and livery to name a few, that can Identify the series.
The bike in the link is S1 probably manufactured in 2005.

If the instrument cluster is circular with an LCD rev counter, and the rear foot pegs are welded on, it's an S1.

If there's a separate rev counter and instrument display, and the rear footpegs bolt on, it's an S2.

The welded, passenger foot pegs are also ONLY on the S1.

Yes, that's the different subframe, unless of course, the subframe was swapped.
Lots of parts S1 and S2 are interchangeable.

Any tips on where to find the VIN? Steering head pipe?

edit: Not sure for S1, probably steering head as you said. S2 has it on the frame, right side of bike.

Thanks for your answers guys. Looks like im about to become a FZ6 owner....

i just had the testdrive, and it was amazing. I inspected the bike and took some picture, including the VIN.

Using the VIN can you tell me which year it was made?

In the ad for the bike it says 2009 as production year, which can't be true. So i would like to provide him the correct year and use this to negotiate on the price a bit.

It may have been registered later, but that's definitely an S1, built in 2004-2006.

The S1 has twin piston sliding front brake calipers instead of the improved four piston versions from the S2. Also the engine control unit was remapped and an O2 sensor added in the exhaust to improve fuelling and power response.

The coolant expansion bottle was moved from the front right (under the exhaust header pipes) to underneath the petrol tank to protect it more in the S2.

I'm sure there are other differences too.

The VIN check comes up as 2006.
The engine/frame colour are some of the things that seem market dependent. What is true for North American bikes is not always true for European, etc.

Perhaps /apparently, it's different between the US bikes and European bikes.
That or possibly your bike was built in a "change over(not the correct wording) .

Yours is the first S1 bike I've seen with the tank NOT under the seat...

Having had a look at the Haynes Manual, it seems to be a difference between ABS and non-ABS models.

Probably because the ABS models have the pump underneath the seat as well, so they needed to find somewhere else to put the reservoir.
