Loud Exhaust

Silly question: If I don't mind the exhaust getting louder, do I really need to worry about it? I've had my TB exhaust for two years now, and it still sounds fantastic. I've only put a few thousand miles on in that time, though.

Not that silly -

once the packing material is gone, it'll excessively heat the outer shell. On a steel/titanium exhaust you should be okay, the carbon ones though don't do too well with that, and sometimes you'll actually blow a hole in the side of your pipes.

Welcome to the forum!:welcome:

There are numerous threads under the search section.

There are also ways to mod the stock muffler for very cheap as well... Probably (I'm guesstamating) 75% at least of the FZ6's have aftermarket or modded muffflers...(myself included, love my Scorpions)

Should you buy aftermarket pipes, pay attention to if they need re-packing, (or servicing after a certain amount of miles)

Now, where do I find ways to mod the stock muffler for very cheap?:Flash:

For VERY CHEAP, guys have run a large drill bit thru the actual rear exhaust holes (again there's plenty of posts on it). Unfortunatly, it doesn't help much. Very slightly louder, but NOTHING like an aftermarket pipe...

The much larger diameter of the actual exhaust is what seems to make the biggest differencein sound besides the straight thru flow.

Others have VERY MODIFIED the stock muffler, but have spent considerabe time, and special tools (TIG or MIG welder specifically) as well as the skill to fully open and eventually close the stock muffler after gutting it..

Ah... and the Leos get rid of the cat don't they? Can the ECU handle that or should I wait till I have the cash for a PCV to install the pipes?

There is a middle riser pipe that houses the CAT on the 04-06 S-1 FZ6 I believe there are CATs in the header where it goes 2 into one on the 07-09 S-1 FZ6
If your just changing can and the "Y" pipe you're not removing the CAT

Other than the tone changing over time if you have metal cans your okay. If you have carbon fiber it may effect that material more.

It's time for mine so I need to order a repack kit this week....

I did a stock exhaust mod and it was very labor intensive removing the inner baffle etc. I used a corborundum disc to cut it open. What a nightmare! It did sound a lot better than drilling.

On my bike theres two little cats where the exhaust goes 4-2 and then a larger cat on the pipe that goes straight up next to the shock.

Do a search (both here in the forum and on Google) for something like 'FZ6 muffler drill' and you will find posts and videos showing how to make your muffler louder with just a drill. To be fair, I have NOT done this yet as I have lost my enthusiasm for making it louder. I remember a post that put it in perspective, pointing out that between loud music and cell phone calls, cagers aren't listening anyway (was that you, Eric?

But if I wanted to make my bike louder, I would do this before I bought cans......

What's the cheapest aftermarket slip-on exhaust that you know of?

New, you'd have to shop around, I'd be guessing. I would stick with name brands however. You get what you pay for....

They do come up here used for sale somewhat often, for sometimes a great deal but they sell VERY, VERY quickly. You can post a Wanted to Buy or just be very aware on the forum when they pop up for sale.

Just as a side note, the "Scorpion" exhaust, to my knowledge are the only ones that don't require re-packing and have a limited lifetime warranty.

When I bought mine, I wasn't aware of the warranty, re-packing issue (which isn't a big deal). I had never even heard them but was recommended by the mechanic and the shop owner I had dealt with literally for decades as good pipes, reasonably priced, etc.

Best $ I spent on the bike...

How much did YOU spend on them? I know they're pretty costly :(

That's f***king ill, I wanna do that lol. Can it possibly damage the exhaust?

Well yes, it will damage the exhaust, you are drilling it and doing hole where there are not meant to be!

This should help you visualize what is going on, i have marked the part that you drill in red:

Only if you drill till you HIT the air filter!

Now I do not want to attempt this. It sounded good in this video for this guy though.

Hi Kingwu,

I drilled my muffler first, sounded better but not great.

Then I decided to get the stock muffler modified.

I posted it (inter-state) to a exhaust specialist (Mig/Tig) who cut it open, cut out the guts, then welded in straight through pipe and put it back together.
He then posted in back to me, all up $300.

Keep in mind, here in Oz all aftermarket exhausts are $800 and up, at best.

It's not LV or 2Bro's but I think it sounds awesome (and I've had several people tell me it sounds sweet when I rev it up).

That was done over three years ago and I'm still happy with it.
No re-packing needed, it looks stock and is a bit lighter than original.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Mac.

$300 , why didn't you just get a new exhaust?

Well... I got my Leo Vince pipes installed, the bike seems to run pretty good without a power commander. The Leo Vince install did remove the cat in the mid-pipe, but it appears that there's still two more smaller cats at the point where the header goes 4-2. Overall I'm happy for $330 new and shipped to my door I can't ask for much more.
