Magnetic Drain Plug and Oil Filter Magnet Review

Do these things work? The magnetic drain plug does, but are they really necessary?

Was changing he oil in my neighbors Ducati 620ei Monster a few years ago. Here's a picture of the oil drain plug. I assumed it was the OEM plug and it was obvious the magnet on the plug took some larger ferrous debris and held on to it. I'm thinking the magnet plug is a good thing especially at break in. The finer non ferrous materials probably act more as polishing compounds as the parts get to know each other. After that? If you see something new on the plug you might keep an eye on it.
 
I run magnets in everything I own. both the drain plugs and magnets that attach to the filter. I believe they are called Filter Dots if I remember correctly. Never had a problem with them holding on to the bike filters at speed either.
 
I would say that anything extra that can filter out contamination or give you an idea of just whats going on inside your engine is a good thing...

I think its a good idea, especially depending on the bike. My K&P oil filter (not K&N) on both my FJR and FZ have a small magnet built in it (same filter) as well.

The Kawasaki KLR 650 is known to have a crappy balancer chain tensioner/design. The main tension spring is known to fail often within 1,000 miles of being new. Having that magnet in the engine would help grab the broke end of the spring (its also fairly close to the drain plug) and not let it float around the engine...

If using a standard steel oil filter on the FZ, you could just stick a strong magnet to the outside of the filter where oil is pulled/pushed anyway...

So I finally decided to try this simple "mod" out. We have these medical grade magnets at work and when they expire it just ends up as trash. Rather than throwing it out I decided to use it for this. These are small magnets with VERY strong pull. I proceeded in covering the K&N filter with it. It took 26 of these magnets to cover the top, next time I plan to make a sleeve and fit around the filter. My concern is that will all the potential magnetized particles (hopefully very little to none), isn't it more engine damaging if those were to break loose and starts recirculating as a big chunk versus separate tiny pieces? I will have a dirty deed in a few weeks when my oil change is due and I will have to dissect the filter to see how much magnetized particles where trap. I'll try to post a picture of it then.

Cut the filter open when you change it and see if there are any particles stuck to the walls. I predict there won't be any.
