Naked converted FZ6, how could I go about getting low and high beam functionality?

Oh, so this will still work then...cool. One more question & I promise to stop bothering you about this...on the 85 pin to ground, can I connect to the frame or does it have to bolt to the negative battery terminal? Also, is there another name for the headlight relay? I can't find that in the service manual. There's a dimmer relay...

First things first.... ask as many questions as you want.... we are all here to help.

Pin 85 needs to be at DC ground. The battery neg terminal is best, but any ground will work. For me, I installed a Power Distribution Unit (PDU). I installed the Fuzeblocks FZ1 (https://www.fuzeblocks.com/). This allowed me to run a single set of wires between the FZ1 and the battery. I then run all my 'extra' wires to the FZ1. Just a neater solution. Like everything else, there are lots of PDUs, this is the one I chose.

Do you have the official factory service manual? if you do, the headlight relay is item 60.

I do have the service manual...#60, that's what I was thinking! I'll inform my son these options & let him decide. Really, really appreciate your help.

Excellent! Look at the diagram at #55, the high-low beam switch. They show a black line coming off it that goes nowhere. Adding the wire connects that to the unused filament on #63, the H4 bulb. Adding that wire allows the switch to toggle between the yellow wire (high beam) and the unused (low-beam) filament on the H4.

Good luck.

The US version of the FZ6 eliminated 1 wire from connector B on the schematic that went from the headlight switch to the un-used spot on the H4 headlight connector. Adding that wire will allow the handlebar light switch to toggle between high and low beam. The connector slot is vacant and I believe that it is an 'MT090' (see post #18 in this thread https://www.600riders.com/threads/st2-self-cancelling-indicators.59522/ ). All you need is a male pin for the connector, a flag connector to insert into the unused spot on the H4 connector and enough wire to go between the 2. This is the factory solution so no problems down the line with a hacked-up wiring harness.

Wait, think I just got this...all I need is to run a wire from the bulb connector to the missing pin on the 12-pin connector just in front of the battery? Was it the low beam connector? We spliced a new headlight connector so I don't know which beam wire was missing from the stock connector.

I believe so. You are connecting to the green wire on the female side of the connector..... per this diagram

Oh man am I happy you took the time to explain the simpler solution...this is a no-brainer compared to the relay I asked for. I breezed past all of it, thinking it only applied to the dual-light, stock setup. People like you are what make sites like this worth it's weight in gold.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 12 pin connector near the front of the bike, behind the steering head? Will the battery or anything else have to come out to access it?
Yes about the location. It was a LONG time past since I did mine, but if memory serves I removed everything up to and including the battery box to do the job. With that access it was simple.

I am not one to cut corners. Give me cozy working quarters and my favorite music, and time is not a factor......

Gotcha...yeah, I'm with you on the removing as much as necessary for access. Thanks for the quick response.

Asked my son about a week ago how the LED bulb was doing since we changed it out, told me he didn't notice any difference when he switches between high & low beams. Started searching for possible issues when I found posts discussing 04-06 service manuals had bad info on the wire schematic for the headlight. The plan was to take the opportunity to run the low beam wire to the 12 pin connector since we were going to be correcting the wiring anyway. He asked why that needed to be done, told him about separating the high & low beam functions....said he was okay with both beams running so we left the connector alone. Corrected the wiring but noticed high & low beam is functioning as it should. Seems the previous owner already corrected this...life is good. Appreciate all the help guys.

sorry dude....I feel ya. My back/hips ached for a few days after that job.
Take a look at Jet Hot (they're in Burlington NC). I had them ceramic coat my gnarly old headers a few years ago and they still look great.....

First pic is March 2019 when I received the coated headers back from Jet Hot...

Second pic is just a random shot from July 2021. In between all I did was wash the bike. Not once did I use any product on the headers. They do look dirtier than when first coated, but it will take 100 years for them to look as bad as they did when I sent them to be coated.

Still stock mufflers?

(Header looks really good)

Getting off topic a bit, but, once I put my Scorps on, I REALLY liked the sound.
Enough to keep the bike NOT as a beater, but my primary and ONLY MC.
Sold the FJR, Goldwing and KLR...

Yeah, those coatings hold up very well when done right.

Funny you should mention it. If the tracking information is accurate my Dominator exhaust should arrive from Amsterdam tomorrow... :)
