So I'm having trouble figuring out exactly which FZ6 I have, and I feel like such an idiot. Is there a way to definitively confirm my bike model? What I mean is, do I have an FZ6R, the Fazer, the S2, a regular "fz6"? I can't tell.

For what it's worth, it's a 2009, and it looks exactly identical to this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/53/2009-02-10_2008_Yamaha_FZ6_on_stand.jpg

Same color, looks, etc. That picture says it's a 2007 in the write up, but the pic calls it an 08 fz6, but I don't think the 2007 came in this color stock?

How can I find out?

Seems like you have the FZ6 S2. Look at the swingarm, the smooth edges show the main difference.
Picture here.
S2 AFAIK is any of the North American models between 2007-2009.
In 2009 they added the FZ6R along side the FZ6 S2, so everything after 2009 is an FZ6R.

As for the Fazer thing, I think that's just the name of the series or something. Everyone is throwing that around for every model it seems.

I may be wrong because I'm new here, but I hope not.

Right you have the S2 version of the FZ6. Model years 07-09 are S2 and have several small updates over the S1- display, swing arm, brakes, fairing.

The FZ6R is a completely different bike. New engine, 25 less HP, 160 section rear, steel frame, heavier, side fairings, marketed for new riders.

Full name is FZ6-S S2
FZ6 means FZ6
S means - plastic (not naked)
S2 - 98hp engine

if you had ABS, the name would be FZ6 SA S2

if it is exactly the same as the one in pic its a 2008 model (with black moles around the headlights). the S1 versions had a larger fairing and different brakes and swingarm. S1 had the full power engine version as well as the restricted one.

the fazer name is used in europe to indicate its the half faired one since both the naked and the faired versions sell alongside.

You're in the USA - there's either the first-gen = S1 = 2004-2006... or the second-gen = S2 = 2007-2009.

For whatever reason, here in the US we like our vehicles to have alphanumeric names. Here our bike is called the FZ6, elsewhere its known as the Fazer. The Honda 599 is the US name, elsewhere its known as the Honda Hornet. The Yamaha YZF600R is the Yamaha Thundercat in Europe. The Lexus IS300 is the Lexus Altezza elsewhere.

Horse power ratings were the same 97 HP from 2004 to 2009 although ECU mapping had been modified for better fueling in the S2 series. In 2007 horse power ratings were restricted for European models.

Although the name is much the same the FZ6R is different model bike.

Here's another decent source of FZ6 history: Yamaha FZ6 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just wanted to add the FaZer is commonly used when referring to all the FZ line including the FZ1, FZ8 and 150.

Originally Yamaha used the Fazer moniker on all it's standard street bikes. I remember the Fazer name being used over 20 years ago.

Hey..

I'm confused about a few things regarding a F/-6 I just recently bought,
hopefully you guys can clear some of these things up?

1) My FZ-6 papers identify the "model number" as being "RJ14" or "RJ148" (..in between the very long
ID number), which would make it a 2007 FZ6 model, but
while the bike itself is painted black, those motor parts, which
are supposed to be black on 2007 models, are silver still.

2) The bike appears to have 98hp, not the 78hp which 2007 models would seem to have, according to some datasheets I looked up..

*scratches head*

Anyways, I was trying to find out the exact model year etc because
the previous owners made some modifications to the bike
and I wanted to be sure what I purchased.

*edit* just took some photographs of the bike in order to better determine
what type & model year it should be or could be...is this a 2007 or 2006 model? Is it the "FZ6-S2", "FZ6-SA", "FZ6-S", or something else entirely?

3) I also wonder about what type of case or bag might have been
sitting on top of the back of the bike, that whole assembly came wthout
details or paperwork, ...looks a bit like a DIY job upon closer inspection but
I got no clue what it was used for exactly.

4) Oh and lastly I was wondering about how long tires generally last these days before they should be
exchanged (ignoring their profile depth, just talking about the age here) , I was not driving
a bike for 10 years or so, plus I had an enduro before, so I don't know a whole lot about such things yet sorry. :)

any ideas guys?

Its an S1 model.

The welded on pillion pegs give it away.. In the US, its considered 2006 or OLDER.

I understand in some countries, when the bike is sold or registered, even if it sat on the showroom floor for say 5 years, its considered THAT YEAR, not the manufactued date bike..

Mine is a US version, a 2007 moel, S2

Thank you Scott! :)

I already suspected there had to be some kind of disambiguity or difference between the manufacturing year and the date on which the bike was sold for the first time.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the Wiki just has poor grammar.

'The FZ6 in 2006 has a revised engine, frame, subframe, grabhandle, rear swingarm and wheels are painted in black.'

Does that mean as of '06, all those parts are black? For some reason I thought that started with the '07.

Your welcome.

In the US, I learned that over on this forum in the last couple of years, just differences in how the countries register the bikes.

Kind of odd really. If you order a dash gauge for an 07 (S2) from the US, it definitly WON'T fit your bike, (very different dash).
