:welcome:

You'll be fine. I'm 5'8" and the FZ6 was my first bike, too. I'm sure you'll find it to be comfortable ride. You may not be able to put both feet down flat at the same time, but you'll be okay on the balls of your feet.

Search the forums (Search -> Site Search/Google is best) about shaving the seat down or lowering the bike if height turns out to be a problem.

Nice site to see how you'll fit on various bikes:

Motorcycle Ergonomics

About 22.52% of FZ6 riders are our height

5'8" here
it's fine.
all my bikes get taller and taller.
Practice putting just one foot down. Keep the other covering the rear brake.
At the last second before the stop, push on the left grip and the bike will fall towards the left.

Thanks very much to all of you for the replies.
Definately going by your heights and the tips it sounds like
I should not fear that this bike is too big for me to get started on.

You might rephrase the original post and ask for INSEAM and height. Rider weight impacts sag too so it all adds up.

5' 10", 32" inseam, 205lbs w/gear. bike fits me better than the other leading brands. . .

I'm 6'2" , but have a short inseam at only 32". My bike is lowered an inch and it's perfect. Great ride and comfortably able to plant both feet firmly on the ground when I stop.

Jim, can you shere which lowering kit you choose (and where did you get it) ?

Keog: I'm 5'9", 32" inseam and i think it fits me perfectly. You might want to play little with handlebars (eventually put risers) but it's up to you and your ergonomics :)

About first bike... probably most guys on the forum won't agree with me. I think it's not a good first bike. It have a lot of power (all FZs have and its very tempting to use it) and sensitive throttle (at least mine have) - small change on wrist and you can scare yourself on the turn.

I've choose FZ because of ergonomics not power. Power wise I would be fine on ninja500 on twisty goat trials I'm riding and it would leave me enough power to ride safe on US highways.

I would suggest checking out smaller bikes (ie. ninja 250 or 500) as they are more forgiving and you will learn FASTER on smaller bike - just give it a second thought. Then choose bike which gives you tickling sensation in your bum whatever that be

The lowering spring is a Hyperpro. The bikes previous owner purchased it and did the install, so I'm not sure how much he paid for it, but I've looked around and it appears to go for about $250 (averaged from multiple sources). The install doesn't appear that hard if you have a decent mechanical apptitude and/or some experience working on bikes. I, luckily enough, have both. Lol.

Additionally, I completely agree with you on the bike choices based on size and ergonomics. I think that many a "rider" bought a bike because it looked cool and completely forgot that they might not ride it if the thing is uncomfortable or too wieldy. I rode a bunch of bikes before I settled on the FZ6 as my choice. Good advice, I just wished more people thought about it before making the purchase.
