i never ride without gear, in the uk most people wear gear, not only because its pretty damn cold but its mainly chavs on badly made streetfighters that go without no one wants that reputation :BLAA:

also if you shop around it can be cheap, i purchased my leathers on ebay used but in top condition with a textile jacket for £50 in the morning when no one was on the site, i then sold my leather jacket so i have a leather/ textile combo, and got £60 for the jacket, so i made a £10 profit on wearing kit :)

Besides the pants (they can be expensive, especially if I want them to match my AStars Durban jacket), I wear all the gear.

I have watched a couple videos posted in the forums and have decided that I want the least amount of pain in the event of a crash. I really don't want to lose my skin.

Very informative video. Very graphic without being disturbing, therefore effective.

So I finally had the pleasure of meeting Brittany last week. She was actually here in Boise Idaho! We had a nice chat talking about motorcycle safety and gear. I always made it a point to write down here website on the dry erase board when I was teaching the classroom during the Basic Rider Course. I've actually had riders who came to class wearing a half or 3/4 helmet and switch to a full face helmet just because they took the time and watched her video.

I recently wrecked on my FZ6. I got slammed hard on the ground with the left side of the bike. I broke my left collarbone and injured my right hand. The palm of my hand caught the ground trying to save myself and my shoulder. I ended up just bruising some of my knuckles and hyper extending my fingers.

Thanks to my full face helmet, leather jacket, and leather glove. I have all of my skin. I'm a little bruised and a new 8" steel plate freshly installed into my shoulder for my collarbone.

I'm really happy I wore my leather gear and my helmet. Here in GA it's no odd to see most everyone on these hot summer days wearing a t-shirt and shorts. I can't imagine how much worse off I would be without my gear.

I've seen her videos before and other also. It really shows what gear can do for you.

I am almost healed up and can start riding again in a few weeks. Already bought a new bike.

Hope to see you guys out there. Stay safe.

Blake

Good to hear you are the mend, and no doubt you are looking forward to getting on the new bike.

Here in the UK it's very rarely warm enough to stupidly ride in only a 'T' shirt and shorts, but you do see the odd idiot ocassionally.

I follow the rule 'ATGATT', no matter what the distance of the ride is.

Be safe and happy riding, when you're well enough to get on it again.

...who the F#$% does 120 with a passenger?
thats just stupid
+1

I also notice that the video is of her riding down the wrong side of the road for an extended period of time. It kind of seemed like she was speeding as well.

I agree with and support her message. The video would be more compelling if I weren't so cynical.

I wish I could figure out an easy way to wear protective pants, but I wear dress clothes to work, and ride to work. I'm not into swapping pants and shoes and carrying them everyday. I've considered trying motocross knee pads, but I think they would just slide off / disintegrate if I fell and slid.

I DO always wear top half /vital organ protective gear, and have a set for any passenger that I carry, too, with multiple full face helmets in a variety of sizes.

Nice post, something to think about.

And on another note, how about these kids that wear their helmet on the SIDE of their bike!? I saw two today. I think their mom makes them buy a helmet and they take it off and pin it to the bike a block away from the house. That's the only thing I can think of.

There is no excuse, I have a First Gear jacket that is full mesh, with armor. I've worn it on hot days, no problem, as long as I'm not stopped for a long time.

Tried any pawn shops? Times are tough. That guy that sold his bike to pay the rent doesn't need leathers any more. More money on E-bay but he can still dream of better times and getting his leathers out of pawn. As far as jeans ( Levis, canvas trousers for the furreners) go, if that is what it is, then that is what it is. Get a pair of knee protectors used by carpet installers. Cost less then half what knee pads cost in a cycle shop. Same basic pad. They might look 'funny' (odd) but not as funny as bone splinters poking through the only skin you will every have.

I feel naked without my gear. I totally believe in ATGATT. All The Gear All The Time.

Brittany is awesome!

I totally believe in ATGATT too! It can get into the 100's here in the summer. Very hot, but I always have all my gear on. I would rather have my jacket pealed off of me because of the sweat than my skin in the event of an unforseen get off. :cheer:

Not wearing gear is a good way to get those tatoos removed. I don't know if it's cheaper than medical removal but it's faster. :D

I came off my SV650 at 50mph wearing normal jeans after uttering the infamous words..."its fine, I don't need them" about my protective trousers.

Only lasting injury is a permanent scar on my leg reminding me to wear all my gear, all the time! Helmet saved my head, jacket saved my back that day.

Regards,

Si

Today I came across a GXR-750 on the ground after an inexperienced rider target locket after going too hot into a turn and dropped it on the left side as he slid into a ditch. He was wearing a fill face helmet, sneakers and open-fingered cloves. His hands were a bloody mess. I stopped and got help, and in the wait for the ambulance had a nice chat with him about gear. It is sad that some people learn AFTER they get a taste of things....

Anyway, I felt like I did my good deed for the day, convincing him that IF he ever gets back on, the gear is the most important thing to invest in...it was an easy sell.

Hope he is OK, but his injuries looked all external.

...and he promised to take the MSF course as well

Just picked up a Draggin kevlar shirt locally for $50....worn only a couple of times. The more protection the better.

As a wise man once said...."don't dress for the ride....dress for the crash"

Looks like that rider is doing everything backwards:spank: Take the MSF course, learn to evaluate the risk and the consequences of riding a motorcycle, with or without gear.
