~~~ What did you do to your Bike Today Thread??? ~~~
I was hoping to get to ride some this weekend, but pulled my bike out to get it out of the way of the one we have for sale and noticed fluid dripping. Gotta replace the flipping water pump now. I am crushed. I'm in my last semester at school and it is all clinicals. Due to insurance requirements I am not allowed to ride to my clinicals. So the weekend is pretty much it for me right now. This sucks!
Better you saw it now instead of getting stuck with a blown engine out on a ride.
I bought a an OEM replacement key as a spare. My used bike only came with one key. Do they normally come with two? I would expect they do. Cheap insurance plan in my opinion in the case that I lose my keys on a ride somehow.
When I bought mine (used) it only had one key, so I went to a locksmith to get a second and he noticed my original was starting to crack. I could have ended up with NO key, unless you count the one broken off in the ignition! :jawdrop:
If you can operate a screw driver and a ratchet, order the seals and bearings and take the pump to a bike shop. I bet they'd charge you less than an hour to pop new bearings and seals in. Bolt it in, connect hoses, add fluid and your done.
Please do clean and check - make sure its not just a hose seeping!
Thanks! Yes we checked, it is definitely the pump. My husband is my mechanic. :) He ordered all of the parts for it, just waiting for them to come in. All of the parts were available through Ron Ayers.
While on the subject of water pumps, I found the hose clamps on my bike's pump to be quite loose when I changed coolant recently. Worth a check if they've never been touched.
Lubed my clutch and throttle cables with ez glider syringe setup - great product.
Had my first night commute last night which forced the immediate purchase of : grip puppies, mirror extenders, philips xtreme visions and rim reflector tape.
Spent the afternoon pondering drilling baffles vs. £200 used Beowulf exhausts...
After all the recent running around the insurance for the damage settlement and UPS to collect the packages from PartShark.com, I spent the last two days putting brand new fairing on the bike. Apart from the fairing itself, I had to replace the handlebar - got a FZ6R for it, and got adjustable brake/clutch levers and frame sliders from eBay. And today I got to go on a two-up ride too - the first proper short-ride of the year - felt good!!!!
All Shiny & New
Now if you ppl stop discussing suspension upgrades in the other threads, (actually I am already thinking of hyperpro/racetech Blah ).. that'd be great.
Was going to polish the headers. Got some beer. Figured it may be easier with the headers off the bike. Yeah, I forgot that the gaskets are not re-usable, so I now have to wait till Tuesday when the new parts come in. Ended up missing a decent weekend. View attachment 52836
Otherwise, as a part of de-winterization I checked and re-greased front and rear bearings, replaced the rear brake lines with stainless steel lines and replaced flush turn signals with rizomas.
Rode it 75 miles last night. Rode it to work today and for being such a good kid, lubed the clutch cable and changed the oil!
Changed fork oil to 15WT, added Slingshot preload adjuster and lowered the front by half an inch (13-14mm).
The front feels a bit firmer now, due to a combination of heavier oil, 5-6mm default preload added to stock springs. And I personally feel that lowering made the bike happier to turn - it just feels much sharper in the turn. Earlier I felt it used to wallow in the turns - feeling taller and took some effort taking U-turns.
Would it upset the geometry too much if I drop the front closer to an inch?
Things were good today, finally filled her up, bought a high visability jacket and took a nice country drive. Only really need to order a double bubble windscreen, stock one is making so much noise [emoji34]. Mighty have to look for one this weekend.
applied Mother's Back To Black to frame, engine casings and covers, and all black plastic / rubber trim. bike looks aces :thumbup:
Got home today after a weekend at my girlfriend. A note in the mailbox that there's a package with my neighbors for me. My Puig double bubble windscreen!
Had to install in inmidiatley.
Will test tomorrow how the buffeting and noise is on my way to work. But I'll keep it for looks anyway. [emoji41]
