Also heard this difference between the inline 4s vs the V-twins when I was first looking at bikes. Just curious what are your thoughts on the tripples? Are they really the best of both worlds?

Well I've explored the mild-manndered side thus far and looking forward to experiencing the other side.

I have two triples now. They have so much more torque. I can do 90mph on my Sprint ST 1050 in 4th gear and not even notice it. I can start out in 6th gear too (don't ask how I know that or tell my hubby lol) on my Sprint. My Street Triple R is a 675. It is so much lighter than my Sprint that I can get some good revs for it.

The one major bummer (at least for me) is the compromise on engine/exhaust sound. In my opinion, the sound of a 600 inline 4 (especially with aftermarket pipes) is pure music to my ears compared to a triple or twin. Twin sounds like a yard tool any way you slice it. Triple is somewhat in the middle for sound but still nowhere near the amazing symphony of an inline 4.

And yes, you do compromise torque with an I-4 when compared to twins or triples. But the FZ6 is plenty fast for me!

Thanks for sharing. Also curious what your thoughts on the FZ6 vs the ST3? I think I may grab one in the future.

Also don't see too many people from Reno here. Will be making my annual pilgrimage home in a few weeks.

I don't think I've ever taken mine over 9k on the street, I've seen top end twice and both times it was on a dyno.

I bought an MT-09 Tracer a few months ago and the grunt is great compared to the 600.

I'm 56, I don't know where that puts me in the age rankings :)

I never need more than 7k rpm when commuting. That being said it's really a good thing for me because when my right hand gets heavy on the throttle there is still another 7k rpm for me to use. Although I have never hit the redline and don't think I ever will. I love this bike, Does everything I need it to and more.

Since we are referencing age I'm only 26 but have been called an "old soul" lol planning on riding till I physically can't anymore and am glad to see older folks still riding.

I've owned MANY bikes, singles, parallel twins, V-twins (HD and Honda VT1100's), inline 4's, flat 6 (Goldwing), but never a 3 cylinder.

With that said, when I bought this FZ, it was to replace my "beater", an 05 KLR250, 26,000 miles. I also had the wing and the FJR in the
garage (yes, 3 bikes).

The FZ was bone stock, wrecked. I fixed all the damage (replaced a bunch of parts) aftermarket pipes, etc. I fell in love with the bike.
Great mileage, tires last 2-3 times as long than the big bikes, and the power at the upper end of the RPM range...

Sold ALL the other bikes as I like this bike so much ( and don't cross country ride anymore). Much easier to maintain, comfortable, and will hold
it's own should a supercharged Linginfelter Corvette "want to play". :)

I rode a Triumph 1050 triple last fall in the Ozarks. Real nice motor, plenty of grunt from 2k rpm and pulled smooth all the way up the rpm range. The sound it makes under WTO was different in a good way. However the buzz in the handle bars above 60 mph was too much for me.

Someday I need to ride Yamaha's 900 triple to compare it to the British bike.

Fun bike and with some mods it comes to life pretty well.
I dont think it was mentioned but 11 to 12 sec in 1/4 mi depending on rider and track.

30K mi of playing on all kinds of roads and she never disappoints. Be safe when you open it up.

All, still alive but pulled back to regroup.

The vette and I were at a stop light, him behind me. We're getting ready to go over a 2 mile two lane (2 lanes one direction-separate bridge for the other direction) bridge, no side streets, no places for radar, etc...

It was a straight on run, WOT thru all the gears (no stop lights) into triple digits.

He couldn't get away from me and vise versa, till we ran out of bridge (and land where trouble may await)... :)

My lil $2,000 stock FZ vs his $200,000+ vette.. Surprised him!

Ya, it was something like that.... A divided highway, light and fields... I let him go after I made stand and that was that. A good neck an neck tho! The sad part is they don't know these are $3,000 bikes! But who cares...

Our exhaust notes get a little wild in that clip....

to OP:

My bike basically lives above 7k. You'll get twice as much power up there as what you're used to, and it's addictive. The acceleration on this bike is pretty insane for something that's not a straight-up supersport at only 600 cc.

Find an empty flat road and try to take it through the first two gears up to 12500. You'll be shocked.

It'll get well into triple digits in 3rd and top out around 135 in 4th. Fourth, fifth sixth gears are basically just for comfort and fuel economy on the highway.

Here's a graph to put things into perspective...

FZ6RvsFZ6.jpg

You will note that The FZ6R is superior up to 8500 rpm and the FZ6 "flat spot" between 6-700 rpm has been eliminated. However, from 9000 rpm the FZ6 blows the R away.

120 km/h (75 mph) in 6th comes up at 7000 rpm, and, if you need to overtake quickly, there's nothing more satisfying than dropping 3 gears to 9000 rpm and pinning the throttle. It feels as if there's an afterburner kicking in. :D

On a twisty road, keeping the revs at 8-9000 rpm in 2nd or 3rd provides good engine braking and then excellent acceleration out of a corner...

Off topic...

I'm surprised to learn how may of us geezers ride an FZ6. I've always thought of it as a "starter bike" (I'm a reluctant owner - I bought from a friend of my son who was entering the Navy). But after making suspension and seating mods, I've come to see it as a modern standard and even a light duty tourer. Aren't we supposed to be riding $20k BMW's at our age? Damn we're a cheap bunch. Smart too.
