Hi all,

My bike is due a major service soon as it will have reached 26k. Question is do i get the work done at the dealers in order to maintain full dealer service history or do i get the work done at a local garage at potentislly half the cost?

Also, can someone provide details of what work is carried out as part of the 26k major service please

Thanks in advance

tbh I'd get it done at an independent, at 26k miles the bike is going to be devalued a fair bit, and dealer servicing doesn't hold as much weight for bikes (unless it's a ducati)

The biggest item at 26K is checking the valve clearances. Most FZ6's don't need any adjustments but certainly a good check if you happen to have one out of spec.

There was other thread on same subject, but I can find it.

Depends what was done recently on the bike. My list usually goes:
- valves clearance check (and timing chain while you're there)
- brake fluid change (and check seals)
- change fork oil
- flush coolant
- lube steering head bearings
- M/C rebuild if any doubt about braking performance
- check (and/or replace) brake lines
- engine oil + oil filter
- lubricate swingarm bearings (and rear shock linkage when you're there)
- check chain slack
- lube throttle/clutch cables
- lube grip under throttle grip

That's it it think. Of course if some stuff was done recently, I don't bother. But usually that stuff is not often checked.

But on the other hand I'm probably maintenance nazi. I like have every thing checked.

£420 for the service from the dealers
£300 fur the service at an independent garage.

Is it worth paying the extra £120 for a dealer service? Also how much have you guys paid for a similar service

The dealer service includes the following:
Oil and oil filter
Spark plugs
Air filter
Check valve clearances
Strip and redo brake callipers
Lube throttle and clutch cables
I believe there is further lubing but I didn't get all the details

tbh I've never had mine serviced by somebody else

I was going to get it done over when it snowed at my independent, who wanted 150+parts (this included valve check)

most of the maintenance is easy enough to do yourself, it seems uncommon for valves to go out by much, but there's always going to be exceptions. FWIW I have 34k miles on the clock and have never checked them.

I could probably do most of it myself but wouldnt have the stamp in the service book unless that doesnt make a difference when it comes to selling the bike?

have a look for similar bikes for sale and see what you think

i don't think stamps add a significant value to a bike personally

Personally I think the stamps are only worth it for the first 4 years or so of a bikes life, depending on warranty. Though if buying one it could be reassuring, all depends on the reputation of the dealer.
My 08 bike is coming up to 41k miles. I've got invoices from most of the independent services and the parts when I've done it myself.
Not sure it'll do much good if I sell it as it's now classed a high mileage bike :/
