Anybody gotten a ticket or been cited for too loud an exhaust??

I can safely say that I've owned motorcycles louder than any FZ6, my Buell 1125R with a Free Spirits cored exhaust. On that bike I had a woman, look right at me and pull in front of me. I had to run off into a grass lawn. What saved my left leg, was me thinking, "What if she pulls in front of me?" Not my exhaust at 100+ dbs. Remember your exhaust and sound goes out the back of the bike. Thinking a vehicle with the windows up, a/c blasting and two screaming kids will hear you is fooling yourself.

Remember the bumper sticker; "If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride will do."

All loud pipes do is piss drivers off and give us, motorcyclists, a bad (worse) name.

Stock exhaust-very quiet
Stebel horn-very loud

I think I have the best of both worlds......
Keep the neighbours happy, and let the idiots know I'm there, wether it be peds or cars (although some times they look bewildered when there is no truck to be seen)
Sent from the phone: sorry 'bout my spileng, fat fingers...you know!

loud pipes are going to be a bigger issue in the future.
the laws are already on the books, but there isn't much enforcement. all bikes meet federal noise regs from the factory.

they've recently come up with ways to measure the amount of noise in a standard way. police are being trained in this method using a decibel meter. it's a SAE spec:
http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/713/3788/Motorcycle-Article/SAE-Releases-Motorcycle-Sound-Test.aspx

the reason is that people are getting pissed off over loud pipes. now there's enough technology and financial incentive to enforce those laws. by enforcing i mean being pulled over and having a cop measure the sound of your exhaust and use that in court against you. i wouldnt be surprise if this gets automated and, like a speed camera, you get a ticket as you ride by a box with a microphone and camera in it.

of course, there are cars with loud exhausts and stereos, loud lawn mowers, etc. but the bottom line is that loud pipes give people another excuse to hate motorcyclists and invites annoying legislation.

excessive legislation and being single out by the police never helps anyone. for example, one reaction by regulators is to lower the noise level of OEM exhausts of new bikes. i believe the european union has done this. this doesnt solve anything, and in fact probably encourages more loud aftermarket pipes, since it makes new bikes more expensive, heavier and probably affects performance.

i have an aftermarket exhaust and it's not louder than stock, but it's MUCH lighter! love it!
loud pipes risk rights!
go watch South Park Season 13, Episode 12 - "The F Word"!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think that is the case... however loud pipes are often a tell of a personality type for sure. Don't get me wrong, I have scorpions on my bike and enjoy occasionally pulling out the baffles and making a little noise, but there is a point where I do believe something should be done to stop it. I mainly bought the scorpions for looks to get rid of the stock plastic exhaust cover and I mostly leave the baffles in because I believe the bike performs better with them. I have really never really heard a 4 cyl. with pipes that I felt needed to be fined, I have heard many twin engines that probably should have been.

Not at all just that it's a topic that can provoke strong opinions. Some people like loud and some people don't. All that matters at the end of the day is doing what you want, it seems to be that hardly anyone has gotten ticketed for loud pipes here, even though some people seem like they want us too. But no matter what loud pipes do get you herd, will that lady in her brand new Benz hear you up ahead? Probably not, but I bet that person 1 car in front of her can with their window down...

Its your life, ride what you want, how you want.

Me personally, I love my scorps. My neighbors HATE me for it - every morning at 4:30am. I haven't gotten a ticket in 3 years, but I've got knocks on the door from neighbors.

To each his own - rock what you got.

And to whoever said that anybody who has loud pipes can't ride - :rof::rof::rof::rof:
