Hi people I went out to my bike after shopping and discovered that my tender plug was missing. I was wondering if I could wire this onto the tender lead and charge it through the auxiliary lighter port?
I just wanted some advice before I commenced.

Not sure what you're asking...
You had one of these on your bike, but then came out from shopping and discovered it was gone? I doubt someone would've lifted your tank to unscrew the cable from the battery...

The end plug had been cut off. Rendering the wire useless I want to know if I can wire in the plug in the picture I posted and charge it through the aux port?

That sucks. I've heard of people charging their batteries through their 12v outlets, but it would depend if it was wired directly to the battery or through a switched relay. Just check to make sure whatever wiring you use is rated for the current of the battery tender, but that's probably not an issue.

You can buy them already made Cigarette Adapter

Or a new harness like posted above is only $5-6 too - I just tuck mine under the fairings or tank when I'm not using it.

Edit - If that plug you posted came from an old phone or other device, it may have in it some kind of transformer that lowers the voltage to something appropriate for the device, so it may not work. You can probably disassemble it to check it out.

Neil,

If the bike cig lighter port is hot all the time,

PLUS,

That unit pictured puts out 12 volts at the wire ends (it may reduce it to 5 volts if its for a car style GPS, etc),(its not reducing voltage)

Yes, it'd be OK to wire it in and use the cig plug..

It may, in very small letters say the output of it, if not, a volt meter would let you know the output in volts..

If that wire you have is direct wired to the plug assembly with no electronics in between you could use it to do a trickle charge through your cigarette socket on the bike if the cigarette socket is directly connected to the battery.

I would put a 1 amp fuse inline with that assembly to insure there is no high current allowed being that assembly looks like a low current device. What is that plug assembly from?

My intention was to use it as a trickle charge. My aux port is hot wired to the battery and has an inline 1 amp fuse. Instead of buying a new lead for the tender I was looking at things I had lying around. As it's a cigarette charger it probably has some ju ju in it to convert the volts from 12v to 5v so probably not suitable for the trickle charge unless the electrical Gods are smiling down on me?

Ps I'm on nights and all rational thinking has left my mortal soul until the weekend.
As always your help and advice in these dark arts is much appreciated. I have I might add learned how to work out polarity with my multimeter.

If you opened that charger plug you could just remove that little circuit so as to run the 12 volts direct. :)

Good on the polarity understanding! Lol!

Thanks Cliff, as for understanding, it was more like a Homer Simpson moment.

I use a Powerlet socket on my fairing, that is directly wired to the battery, to trickle charge my battery.

I use a Powerlet BMW style outlet socket as well for trickle charging, heated gear, air pumps etc.

I think Neil just wanted something simple to plug into what he already had laying about..

Love the Homer Simpson too, LOL!!!

Thanks guys, I already have the power outlet. I was looking at the viability of charging the battery via the outlet. Many thanks.

You can use it as long as it puts out 12v. But you would still need to get an SAE connector and solder\crimp it on.

If you're going to go through that trouble you might as well order a cigarette adapter with an SAE connector on the end. You can get them for around $5 on eBay.

Radio shack offers a neat kit, it's a 3 way cigarette outlet splitter, the cable between the splitter and the single cigarette plug is an SAE connector, you can unplug it. This gives you the cigarette plug you are wanting along with a plug in 3 way splitter that you can plug into any other SAE connector.

It also comes with another SAe connector with the other end being battery terminals. This is a nice one, it's 10 gauge. and plenty long.

Costs about $15, company says enercell.

I went to three shops today and couldn't find SAE connections anywhere. One of the eBay sites wanted $30.00 to post a $2 item. We don't have Radio shack or Maplins in Ireland so I will probably need to go to the UK to source a couple. I have decided to wire all my gear using the SAE connection.

So I soldered some connections onto the tender and the lead to my battery after confirming the polarity with my new found multimeter skills. Well to be honest, I didn't trust myself 100% so I also disassemble the tender and checked the connections on the circuit board there was a convenient + and - sign and ran it back down the length of my lead. Delighted that I had got it right with my multimeter in the first place. The immediate problem I have identified is that there is now a potential grounding issue as the connections I purchased have bare metal once exposed once connected

I stupidly brought these instead if a bayonet type.
Anyway, I also found a straightforward cigarette lighter connection which I will wire in tomorrow

.
I will of course check the polarity with my multimeter, but my logic is telling me that the spring on the side is the negative wire and the metal connector in line with the fuse is the positive wire?

To test the polarity of the wires I was going to plug it into the hot cigarette socket already wired in and find it's positive and negative leads by running the power through the multimeter.
Please jump in armed with a wet kipper to slap me if I'm talking ****e.
Please bare with me on my electrical learnings as haven't even reach my puberty in this discipline.

Lol! I picked up the SAE type connect that you can go right to the battery with or mod it and do the cig lighter connector.
