Maybe the driver experienced some medical condition? Accelerator pedal got stuck?

San Diego experienced a similar scene just a couple of weeks ago, a taxi plowed through a bunch of pedistrians in the popular Gas Lamp District late at night. They dragged the driver out his cab and literally started to:spank:the crap out of the dude.
