Decibel (Loudness) of Aftermarket Exhaust While Riding??
NOTE--The poll is supposed to state: How loud is it for you while riding on a HWY or freeway for long periods of time with an aftermarket exhaust--silencers in? For some reason the end of the sentence was cut off.
Hi,
I am interested in an aftermarket exhaust, but I have reservations. I don't want to be riding along and after 4hrs be totally exhausted and deaf because of the noise from the aftermarket exhaust. Given that I have a GIVI setup, the only viable option is the Leo Vince exhaust, which I believe is slightly quieter than the Two Brothers setup; although, my preference is the Two Brothers exhaust, but I want to keep my GIVI setup. I have been doing some reading about Decibels to try to determine how loud it is while riding at 75mph per se.
See the two links below for further details.
Decibel (Loudness) Comparison Chart
Decibel (Loudness) Comparison Chart
Two Brothers decibel at approximately 5000RPM
Two Brothers Racing :: Yamaha FZ6 Motorcycle Exhausts, Street Bike Parts, Aftermarket MX ATV Motorcycle Accessories, Exhaust Pipe, Race Exhaust Systems, Sport Bike Parts
The Two Brothers exhaust has a decibel of 101 at 5000 RPMs, which would be about 50-60mph while in 6th, I believe. The Decibel (Loudness) chart states that 90 - 95dB may result in hearing loss with sustained exposure. It also states that OSHA Daily Permissible Noise Level Exposure at 101dB is a maximum of 2hrs, and the NIOSH Daily Permissible Noise Level Exposure at 101db is 1/4hr or less.
The stock exhaust is 86dB at 5000RPM, and the Decibel (Loudness) chart states you can be exposed to that level of noise 6+ hours a day without possible complications.
I guess my question is, when you are riding are you hearing the full 101 dbs or is some of the noise lost since you are speeding forward, and it is behind you? I don't want to be deaf after 2hrs of riding with an aftermarket exhaust. When I have rode with my stock exhaust for long periods of time, it wasn't the exhaust noise that bothered me some much, although it was there, but rather the wind noise because of the OEM windshield directing all the air right at my head.
The following really helped me understand the possible noise difference. The Decibel (Loudness) Comparison Chart,' states that an increase of 10dB is perceived to be about twice as loud, and an increase of 20dB is perceived to be about four times louder, which means going up 15dB (the approximate difference between an aftermarket exhaust and the OEM exhaust) would be perceived as 3Xs as loud.
Thoughts and more specifically, how loud is it for you while riding on a HWY or freeway for long periods of time? Have you ever wished the OEM exhaust was back on during these times?
Thanks in advance for you comments and feedback.
