Hi I ride my fazer 600 to work every day and have no other transport
When the weather is warm she runs lovely

But when its cold shes a pig
Starts with no problem
But by the time ive gone just a mile down the road she starts to choke and smell of fuel . I have to keep the revs high or it just stalls
Ive replaced the coils and caps and the spark plugs.
She run well for few days then the cold weather came back AND IT STARTED PLAYING UP AGAIN

I can understand that its carb icing
But there is a pipe that runs hot water past the carbs to stop this
Ive checked that its flowing and thats fine

Does anyone know a way of stopping carb icing as it getting dangerus trying to keep the enging running at rush hour

Thanks Fred

I don't think you are getting any icing it would have to be well below freezing for even a chance of thet happening. I'm guessing the engine is not warmed up enough. It may seem warmed up but after you drive a little the thermostat opens and lets near freezing coolant through the engine resulting in a cold start situation again.

Or could be simple as a sticky choke.

It sounds like the engine is running too rich as it warms up. Does your system use a choke or other type of enrichment when the motor is cold. If your smelling fuel from the exhaust then it's prolly running rich.

Your bike should have a manual choke on it, and if it starts fine in cold weather but after a mile or so starts to act up it sounds like either your not disengaging the choke, or if you are the cable is binding and not releasing it, or something else is not letting it disengage

Hi All thanks for your replys

I know it sounds like the choke
But i dont use the choke to start her
Shes always started first time no mater what the weather

The choke cable is fine

I do 15 miles to work by the time i get there i can hardly keep the engine running
So its not a cold engine
On a warm day i have no problem

There was a frost last night and the car windows were iced up this morning
anything below 4 or 5 c and its un ride able
Its doing my head in now......

This it the second winter i had to use it and had the same problems last year ( mind you it did get to -10c and thought it might have been that )
but it happening again this year and its not so cold

Other thoghts

Last year i tried warming her up for about 20mins before i left home and still had the problem

Had carbs balanced after the service in the summer

Also at the end of my work day after a cold morning she will start but has the problem straight away . I have her coverd with a bike cover while at work
and garaged at night

could it be damp electrics ive tried wd40 on the sparkplug but again no diffrence

Fred

Do you have a pipe on the bike? Done any jet work? Checked your plugs? I would imagine it would need to be a good bit colder before the carbs start to ice, but I've never experienced carb icing for myself so...I just guessing as far as how cold it would have to be.

all standard other than the silencer / k&n air filter and oil filter

Ive just been down to my garage after finding a page on internet about the carb rubbers .
Mine are cracked but was told that they have a metal tube inside so the cracked rubber wont make any diffrence.
On the web page someone has used a tyre punture repair kit to cover the rubbers .
Have you seen the price of these rubbers the cheapest i could find are 75 quid each

Will try the repair kit first ........this weekend

So you have a aftermarket exhaust and a k&n air filter and have not rejetted the carbs? You bike is probably starved for fuel for one thing, and combined with the cold weather it's making it run like crap. If you don't know how to rejet the carb then it needs to go to a shop to have it done, I bet that's a big part of the problem

I'll start off by saying that I'm no where near an expert on carbs, but there is a good chance you are icing up one or more of your carbs. It doesn't need to be below freezing for it to happen, but it does need to be cold and damp (Wisconsin cold, not Florida cold;)). The air rushing through the carb will suck the heat right out of the metal, and the moisture in the air can then condense and freeze on the venturi or plug up any of the jets or needles.

When I had my Ninja 250, my carbs iced up occasionally. It won't happen just idiling in your garage, the volume of air is low, and it isn't moving through the carbs fast enough. Mine would do the same thing, after riding for a bit, it would start to bog and sputter, and nothing helped until it got shut down and it thawed out.

I'm not sure how to solve the problem though. I used to have a snowmobile that would ice up the carbs occasionally, and that had heated carbs. The only thing I found that would work was to shut it off, let the engine heat soak in and melt the ice, and then try it again.

Maybe try to see if there is a way to added heated carbs to your bike? You said there is a pipe that runs by them to keep them warm, but true heated carbs have coolant lines running through them to get the heat from the coolant. You could also check and make sure your airbox doesn't have a lot of condensation in it. Like I said, I'm no expert, but I have experienced it, and it is no fun.

Going to try fix the carb rubbers while on the bike

If that dont work i have some 12v heated pads maybe i could rap them around the carbs

also found the rubbers are £75 for the set not each

Jets
If the rubber fix dont work then i will have to look at the jets
I had to play with jetting on an old 2stroke i had

Do you know what the standard jet size is

If you've got a vacuum leak through the rubbers or icing I would think the bike is going to lean out. I thought in the original post it said there's a smell of gas. If you have a smell of gas to probably have a fuel leak or unburned fuel. If you don't have a leak and you are smelling gas but it's not leaking fuel, you are probably running rich . If it's iced the bike will lean out and when you open the throttle adding air to the mix it would stall but instead your throttling keeps it from stalling. Rich conditions could be choke, worn jets, bad/dirty float needle etc...:D

No I sure don't, I have a 04 which is fi. But I'm not 100% sure if that will fix your problem or not but with your setup your bike is deffenetly running lean, unless a previous owner jetted the bike?

Looks like the carbs are going to come off and cleaned

Not a job im looking forward to
Going to have to spend money on the rubbers too if i got the carbs off

Yeah it smells of fuel but not leaking
I did get a comment from another biker when i was out in the summer that he could smell fuel from my bike when riding behind me . That was summer but it was running well ..

Feels like its running on 3 cylinders that why i first changed the coils thinking they were breaking down when cold . the smell of fuel coming from unburnt fuel .... but coils made no diffrents .

Pull your plugs and you'll see the cylinder that's not running right. You might also check compression on that cylinder. Make sure that plug fires.

Isn't his bike running rich being he's got more fuel to air?

The way he described it with the smell and everything else It sounds like it is running rich or something is t sparking but with a k&n air filter and after market exhaust it should have leaned it way out if the jets haven't ever been touched. Op are you the original owner or did you purchase the bike with the silencer and k&n, or put them on yourself?
