Front Dash/Fairing alignment

OK guys, I just bought my 2007 last week, and I wondered about something as soon as i started riding it home. When I look down while sitting on the bike at where the black plastic of the "dash" comes to the tank, I have a bigger gap on the left side that I do on the right side, none on the right to be exact
So I was wondering if there was any way to adjust this, or if anyone has any ideas of how/why this would happen. I am at school and my bike is at home till friday... So I will try to get pics up saturday, but maybe someone else has had this problem or as heard of it?

There is a lot going on under there, is it a long piece of black metal with holes running the length of it?

I have the same issue on mine, and was a result of it being knocked over. It could either be the main fairing stay (the piece which attaches the fairing to the headstock part of the frame, 14 in the helpful pic above) has been bent slightly, or possibly one of the other two smaller fairing brackets which attach the sides of the fairing to the side of the frame (26 and 29 in the pic above).

Do you have any tell-tale scratches on the fairing/bar ends/mirrors/levers/engine casing/indicators that it's been dropped?

Normally it's just very minor, but probably worth checking for any more serious cracks anywhere. I've not bothered doing anything about it on mine, but it's one of those things that can annoy you more and more! It starts to draw your attention every time you see it!

When I bought it I was told it had been dropped, but there are no major scratches or cracks anywhere. He had frame sliders on and dropped it when he wasnt moving.

Thanks for the diagram, it is awesome and I will look friday when I get my bike back :cheer::Flash: to see if I can find any of those three rackets bent. If one is, do you think I could bend it back or would I be better off buying a new bracket?

My 07 was dropped (prior to my buying it) and main fairing stay bent (maybe 1' ). I replaced it with new factory fairing stay and aligned it. The gap you speak of between the tank (near the front of the tank) and the fairing was also still there.

Part #'s 26 and 29 (from the above photo) can be loosened/adjusted/bent slightly to take the larger gap out. Adjust one side back further, the other further forward. There is also some very slight adjustment with the 2 large bolts that hold the fairing stay to the frame, IE, loosen them and move the fairing stay/fairing if not straight.

***This is as long as the main fairing stay is straight. I could see mine bent by sitting on it, on the center stand, looking at the mirrors, etc, being up slightly on one side.. If yours looks straight sitting there, its just the two rear brackets that bolt to the frame...

After fiddling with mine, its dead even, both sides.

Same thing happened to mine, knocked over by an SUV. The fairing stay ain't cheap though, you're looking at ~$150. You should be able to see some scratches by the right 'ear' of the front fairing where your bike fell down and took the blunt of the blow.

Thats the strange part is that I looked all over and say nothing, i dont know if the fairing was changed and not the stay or what

I have an 06' and the faring stay is a bit different. I went down and bent mine last year and was able to straighten it out. You will have to remove it from the bike to do it. The trick is too look at it closely, figuring out which way it is bent and then what sort of hold / pressure you need to apply to straighten it back out. Look at it from all sides / top / bottom before you decide which way it is out of wack. It is a bit of a knack, straightening out bent metal parts. A good bench vise to hold it when it comes time to bend it back is critical.

The diagram posted above is available online. Most parts suppliers have them up for parts ordering. I typically go to ronayers.com to find parts and charts. The whole bike is up there in similar diagrams. Invaluable tool for the fix it yourselfer.

my 08 has not been dropped, and i too have a gap difference...however its more on the right than it is the left. i can adjust it square, but it eventually finds its way back to unevenness.
