Fuel: All gasoline 91 RON Min

"Fuel: All gasoline 91 RON Min"...is on a sticker on the left side of the swingarm on my '08 FZ6. Does it mean that Yamaha recommends 91 octane fuel for this bike? Why does the owner's manual state that a pump octane rating of 86 or higher can be used? What is a "research octane number?"

Do you guys notice much of a difference between 87 and 91 octane fuel?

RON is how it is rated in Europe, Use the 86 Octane rating.

RON is the research octane number
MON is the motor octane number. The MON is from an actual engine test (a standardized one cylinder engine). The MON is always lower than the RON. In the US the octane rating on the pump is the average of the MON and RON. So in the US, if you use 86 octane unleaded regular gas you will be OK.

I use 91 octane due to its high compression ratio. 12.1:1 I think. It states in your manual that if your engine is pinging on 87 octane to try using 91 octane. I don't think there are any major perfomance differences between using the two grades of fuel... I just choose to use 91. My bike runs great and gets great mileage as well. I haven't run 87 in it since I got it but I could give it a try sometime.

I have never used anything higher than 87 octane in my bike and never had a problem.

I only run 91 for the high compression ratio fact of our engines. Plus in tests of longevity for motorcycles its been proven better. My bike runs great on it, i get great MPG's, everyone i ride with uses 91...nuff said :rockon:

I tried running 89 once and the thing had no top end, didn't feel right, so I went back to the 93 and it ran better once again. I have exhaust, airbox mod, BMC air filter and the power commander though also, so that might play a part in it. I am still confused how these things run on 87 octane but try 87 in a 12.5:1 racecar engine and watch the parts go flying.
