FZ6 Owner again…and troubleshooting already

Just over a year ago I sold my 05 FZ6 to a friend…And then I just bought it back from him yesterday! He’s moving to Florida, and decided to get a brand new ride down there. I called dibs and now I’m back to having a 2 bike garage.

However, I am immediately faced with some troubleshooting. Intermittent errors 33/34 (seems to be a bunch of posts about these codes often lately.)

I’ve got the ignition coils out and I’m testing resistance…both primary’s are 2 ohms, secondary 1-4 35kΩ and 2-3 35kΩ.
From what I’m reading on here, secondary should be ~18kΩ? thought I found an obvious issue, but both sets are the same at 35kΩ, so that gives me pause.

Can anyone verify secondary resistance?

Welcome back to the fold.

35k is too. The higher the resistance, the lower the current (assuming the voltage is constant).

I=V/R

So it would appear that something damaged both coils. Get some used ones on ebay. I would be money the the FZ6 uses the same coils as every other 4-cyl Yamaha of the 2000's.

Thx, I’ll start looking.
Pulled the plugs, they look decent. I reinstalled the coils, cleaned up all terminals, added dielectric grease to the plugs…
Went out for a ride and everything was great, no issues. Weird.

I’ll still hunt for new/low mileage replacements, and see what happens in the meantime. Maybe even explore the COP option.

Yep, I always forget the COP option. I did it on my DRZ and it works great.

Many inexpensive listings on eBay for FZ6R coils...they seem to be equivalent to the FZ6, but the boots are different. Thought about reusing my boots with FZ6R coils, then thought better of it since they may be part of the problem.
Ordered exact replacement set from a 2006 with stated low mileage, we'll see how that turns out and I'll report back.
I was really diving into the whole COP idea, but I guess for simplicity I'm skipping that for now. Think of all the extra room in front of the battery box without those coils! Could store a beer in there.

You'd want to store it at cryogenic temperatures with the hopes that it would only be piss-warm at the end of your ride.

As long as your ecu is in good shape, consider the cop mod. Did mine years ago and never looked back. Works like a charm. I always hated the spark plug caps on the oem coils.

Nice…probably should have gone that way. But already spent the $50 on another set of OEM. If they have any issues I’ll go COP.
Which COP’s did you buy? And did you make your own wiring harness?

Replacement ebay coils arrived. Am I measuring secondary resistance correctly? 1-4 on this set are also ~35kohm.
Measuring from #1 inside boot terminal to #4 inside boot terminal.

Regardless, will be returning this set…#2/3 measuring OPEN on secondary.

Update: Looking at the specs, each boot provides 10kohm alone...so the way I'm measuring you would expect 20kohm at a minimum.
12-18kohm (spec) x 2 plug boots = 24-36kohm when measured in series. Both 1-4 and 2-3 measured 35K. And coils 1-4 of the replacement eBay coils were also 35K. So I think my original coils are OK.

The more I think about it, I believe the issues I was having (intermittent code 33/34) can be traced to a USB outlet the previous owner installed. It's a battery tender USB outlet attached to an SAE plug, wired directly to the battery and zip tied along the stop/start switch cable up to the triple tree. That stop/start switch contains the red/blue tracer wire that provides 12V to the coils. I'm thinking the transformer in the USB outlet so close to this wire caused some kind of EMF/interference.

As mentioned, I reinstalled the original coils...And when I installed them, I happened to yank out that USB dongle. Haven't see the error since; hoping it was the cause!

Yes, the resistance at the coil is measured without the cap/boot.

Pick up my journey at post 208. I used FZ07 coils and I did the terminating myself. If I recall correctly, the connectors are 'Furukawa FW 090 2 Pin Female Connector FW-C-2F-B'. I am an experianced crimper, so the wiring was now an issue.......

Yes I was hesitant when I first thought of the idea of replacing the standard coils with COPs. Once I started finding some links and examples of other bikes being converted I thought I'd give it a go. Having the coils wired in series isn't ideal as if one coil open circuits the other one will...
