Do most European countries recognize SNELL or DOT helmet certifications or is a helmet which is ECE rated required?

I think they recognize SNELL, but not Dropped On Table (DOT).

We use ACU Gold / Silver but the basic standard is:
We recognise:
ACU Silver / Gold
And the generic ECE 22.05 Motorcycle Helmet Standard - webBikeWorld

Thanks for the replies. I currently have an HJC IS-16, DOT approved only, drop down internal sun visor is nice but it is LOUD!! I have been looking at upgrading to a Scorpion Exo 1100 Snell and ECE rated I believe, or a Shoei Qwest (Snell and DOT rated I believe). Any thoughts on these two?
