Immobiliser question

I've recently replaced the ECU on my bike, and the new ECU came with an entire set of locks and keys so that the immobiliser will work and still function.

The immobiliser seems to have 3 components: The key with a chip inside it; the transponder ring that sits around the ignition switch; and the ECU itself.

My question is, is the transponder ring itself coded or does it simply read the code from the key and send it to the ECU? I.e. can I just take the chip out of the new key and have it work with the new ECU, but leaving the old transponder ring in place? Or must all 3 match?

Changing the transponder ring involves disassembly of the bike, and if this won't work then I don't want to hack apart my keys for no reason!

My ignition switch (No immobilizer) wore out some time ago and didn't want to physically turn.

I replaced the switch and went on to re-key ALL the other lock cylinders to match the ignition switch.

Re-reading your post, I don't think your looking to "re-key" the bike as they sent you locks.
In any event, it's not hard at all to R & R them so. Also, when I rekeyed the fuel tank, there's
a little part (don't remember) that I couldn't figure out how it went back in.

The result, lock and cap worked fine however you could NOW remove the key with the cap OPEN..

You will need the transponder key. I'm not familiar with the immobilizer circuit but I would imagine the immobilizer either resides as an out board assembly or is embedded in the ECU. The key likely has a chip that is activated by an electromagnetic field and gives an encrypted code. If the code is the code expected the ECU is allowed to operate. I would imagine the immobilizer resides within the ECU and the other parts are the interface for generating magnetic field and reading and/or translating encryption to the ECU.

I suggest bringing the bike and the key to a place qualified to pair the key to immobilizer.
