Iphone power

Hello FZ6 team.

First timer and new to the forum. Joined as all my searches have directed me here.

So hellooo.

I have a universal power adapter that i need to attach to the battery. Im worried about doing the electrics any damage, so whats the best way of going about this?

These are the connections i've got. I've had discussions with other bikers about whats best, some say to connect to the lights so as not to drain the battery, and others say straight to the battery, and as there is an on off switch (which i will put under the seat for when i don't need power) i suspect this might be better.

I know our good friend Cliff makes a very high quality relay he can wire to tap into the lights if you fancy that. I'm not sure how much a power adapter with nothing plugged into it will strain the battery if the bikes off, long as you dont leave your iphone plugged in. But idk i'm no electrician!

I don't know, but I've been thinking about it. One piece of advice though: I fried the dock port on my first iPhone and the guys at the Apple store said I had probably started the car while my phone was plugged in to the charger. Apparently that can kill a phone. I would imagine a bike can do the same.

I'd splice into the low beam circuit for the power. That way, the circuit is only on after the engine starts.
 
I have a 12v socket fitted to the bike which I use to power my GPS. For my iPhone I use one of these in my tank bag. It holds enough power to recharge an iPhone 6 times over. The only issue is that once your phone is fully charged it switches off so if you are using yout iPhone to track your ride you will have to switch the external power supply back on every 4-5 hours :)

RJ is correct you can use the headlamp circuit on the FZ6 provided it isn't a switched low beam. Some FZ6's may be naked versions and have a switched low beam and that would turn off when the high beam is selected. There are a few ways around that. One would be a stock low beam source as on the fairing version of the bike. That would be the left lamp (Black wire with a green tracer) or if you're just charging the phone or using a GPS you could use the tail light/running lamp circuit.

A separate fused and switched source (a relay) direct from battery is the best solution for an accessory tap. It would enable you to also use a high current device such as heater grips or an 12volt air compress in the future. This relay would be off when the key is off to prevent inadvertently leave a device hooked to the system and discharging your battery.

I am about to do a write up and start making these devices for anyone in need. They will be fused, waterproofed, properly insulated and capable carrying 20 amperes of current. I don't know what you would need to use 20 amps for as an accessory but it's capable in an emergency of carrying more than you would normally need.

What I did was install a 12volt socket with a fuse connected to the battery.

From there I have connected:
1- Charger for the GPS
2- Charger for SENA bluetooth
3- Charger for iPhone
Pending: 4- I have the option to connect directly to the battery (for example: battery tender)
