From my experience, K&N filters come pre-oiled. The cotton distributes the oil evenly inside the mesh. "Front" is usually marked to indicate airflow, with Front towards the throttle bodies.

I've got a used one...think I know which side is the dirty side but I need to be sure. You're supposed to spray the cleaner on the dirty side & rinse, spraying from the clean side to force any debris out & oiling the dirty side.

[opening a can of worms....]

I wouldn't use it. K&N filters don't increase HP nor do they filter small particulates well. It's a lose-lose proposition. It's not worth the scoring in the cylinder walls. Nothing beats a CLEAN paper filter.
I agree with this, i have one because i liked the idea of a reusable serviceable filter, an the amount of cleaner i have will outlast the fizzer, but will not buy a new one for the next bike
