The only time I had to drive down a dirt track was in Florida, and that was to get to a housing estate. In the UK all the public roads i've ever been on are paved.

just busting chops. When i lived in New York, there was some places that only had coble stoe steets it was a town called RICHMOND TOWN in STATEN ISLAND. It was kind of wierd, it was established in 1680 or something like that, and they used no electric or any thing. They wore the whole get up like in the pilgram days. The only good thing about rideing threw or driveing threw it was the vibration on your but.

Two nuns riding(cycling) down a cobbled street...
One nun says to the other
"Have you come this way before?"
the other nun says
"No, but I will again."

Was it anything like this:

I took these photo's today. This is the so called old medieval road from Alkmaar to St. Pancras. There used to be 2 castles situated on it but there are only foundations left as all the stone was taken to strengthen the city walls during the Spanish wars. Yes it is a pain in the bum to ride/drive on it.

Anyone know what the autobahn is made from? I remember it being pretty smooth (although I wasn't on a bike) but can't recall what it's made of (and I don't recall a German member on this board yet).

If the Autobahn was smooth, you had driven on a good one. Some of our Autobahnen are made of concrete and some are made of Asphalt. Some Autobahnen are in a pretty good shape and some are very bad ( almost the Autobahn were the great Truck traffic is ) are very bad, like he A1, A2 of these I know.

I have to admit it's been over twenty years since I'd been on them, too...

that is a shame, i always pictured a race track quality road as the autobahn

All the money the last 18 years were going into the streets/autobahn in (East)germany. The last years, the autobahnen here in (West)germany are being renovated. But as i say before, i don´t drive often the autobahn, I like to ride the normal streets outside of towns (landstrassen) there is normaly 100kph but nobody drives it. an thee are more and wonderful curves! And they are made of asphalt all the way through.

Sounds good enough to me then

It´s verry good and a lot of fun. but in the la months/years the police/city council has closed some roads for using with bikes at the weekends.

Yeah, that´s horrible. But I know why they did it, at these roads were too many bike crashes at the weekends. Some of them were very bad ( sometimes they ende with the dead of the rider ). Too many rider were riding these road too dangerous. And so i can understand it a little bit.

In Germany they have lots of signs for bikes basically saying be careful (I cannot read German but I got the point) especially in the back roads around the Eiffel mountains, like near the Nürburgring. I guess lots of riders take turns too fast and the Germans (at least the ones I was behind) are bad about crossing the center line in curves.

About the autobahn, there were a few unsmooth parts I drove through. But do not be confused. Compared to other national freeway systems the German autobahn is one of the best (especially compared to crappy US interstates). On the unrestricted zones you can take sweeping curves at 130+mph and not have to worry about hitting a bump. Spain also had real nice freeways (almost all asphalt) but they did not have reflectors to mark the lanes and driving 100+ at night around curves was a little stressful.
