The rear fender you have when you dont have a rear fender!

OK, as all of us Aussie's know, FE's are a favourite defect item of the boys in blue in Oz!!!

Well i have a Two Brothers Exhaust, and the OEM FZ6 rear fender cant be used with the TB exhaust...and i aint getting rid of my exhaust!!! But i dont wanna get booked my the boys in blue again for having an FE!

Mikey got done on the weekend, and i dread getting done again!!!

So last night i was looking at the rear fender from my mates MT-01, which has been sitting in my shed for a while now, and got thinking that i might be able to fab up a rear fender of sorts for the FZ6, that would sorta look OEM, but not be as bulky as modifying an FZ6 rear fender (The MT-01 rear fender is much slimmer, and definitely more angular, which is more "my" bike).

So a phone call to my buddy to get his permission to "butcher" his rear fender, and fit it to my bike...

2 things that i was concerned about, one was getting it to line up, and look like a rear fender, rather than a piece of plastic bolted to the FE!, The second concern was getting it to hang low enough that it was 45 degrees to the rear axle with a 45 kilo load on it (The Law)!

As for the reflector part of the law...that was sorted!

Will put some wider shots on here, when i get the rear wheel back on the bike, which i presently have out of the bike for detailing!

It took quite a bit of cutting with the dremel, but in the end, everything lined up rather nicely, and the whole job, took me about an hour!

What you reckon people, do you reckon it will pass muster??? and does it look ok????

This is the thing that ****s me with the FE laws.

If FE's are illegal, then why the hell can we walk into a dealership/bike store and LEGALLY buy the product across the counter.

The same amount of **** & more comes flying up at us from trucks/cars/buses who have much wider tyres and have guards well past the mythical 45 degree angle and nothings said, yet us with our 180 (maybe bigger, maybe smaller) section rears exposed continually get from the plod 'You know how much **** flies up off your wheel, it can be dangerous & cause an accident' etc etc.

Looking good! Any befores and afters for comparison?

To truly make 4 wheel and greater vehicles safe they need to add wheel huggers that reach the ground to the sides of the vehicle, I have been driving (thank god) in the city and totally covered by water coming off the side of a car through a super deep puddle, and I probably would have gone down from the sheer volume on a bike.
I was unlucky enough to have my window open at the time and still got drenched, but at least I lived.

Oh but thats right... its not about safety its about them being able to rob us of our money. Where is Robin Hood when you need him.

hell i seen blokes here in WA use a cut up oil container attached to the plate
they take it over pits and it passes :)

The same reason you can buy race exhaust systems, slicks, and other non road legal items. No FE kit will purport to be ADR compliant.

Now I wanna make one for the R1. Haha! I put an aftermarket FE on the R1 but found that the stinger on the bike gets sand blasted when we ride in the spring on the back roads with hot tires. Two riding buddies also lost radiators this spring because of little stones. I made an additional radiator guard out of expandable lathe, trimming and painting to look like a factory piece.
Great idea on the FE and to tell the truth I feel better about function over looks anyway. Does an FE make the bike go better verses protection? No? Okay.....:rockon:

I had sorta forgotten about the R6 fender idea...but I reckon that might still work better than this job! This one is a little square for my liking's, but as that was the only half decent rear fender I had on hand, it was always going to be the "prototype" for doing such a dick dastardley mod!

Tis better than riding around waiting to be pounced on!

And until the law changes, I guess it's better to tow the line! Even if it is begrudgingly so!

So FE users...get to your local wreckers, and pick up a funky rear fender, and get busy with the dremel!

Oh, by the way, the dremel is much better to use after a brew!, much like playing 8 ball!!! :eek:

just make sure you are wearing safety glasses...I was dubbed "plastic man" when I walked back into the house after fabbing up this thingo!

I thought being Australia,the law would be pretty laid back about that sort of thing......

hmmm....the alien cafe racer headlight has been "in transit" from Spain to Australia since April 28! Expecting it about the end of the month!

The wait is killing me!
