Stock muffler drilling VS. performance

Hello,

i have a stock exhaust system and I want to get rid of the chainsaw sound on my bike.
I don't want anything fancy, just want to get rid of the stock sound)
I want to do it the cheapest way by drilling out the mufflers.

After 5 hours of searching and reading the forum(during work ofcourse:Flip, 3 cups of coffee and one very loud fart, I still have some questions.

I tought about drilling them out while still on the bike (I'm lasy). but then some little pieces of iron will fall into the muffler. does this hurt the bike? Or is it best taken off the bike before drilling?

When the mufflers are drilled, what exactely does it do to the performance, mixture, compression,... of the bike?

Can I just drill them out, and go for a ride?

Nothing. A few little holes is not going to make any performance ganins, nor should it effect your mixtures.

I did this ages ago and there are some pictures and a write up here

• Take it off the bike
• 22mm x 300mm drill bit required
• shake out the drillings
• a little bit louder
• no performance changes

Yeah just drill em on the bike and go for a ride if you must..you will be surprised how little difference it makes tho..

If the hissing sound is gone from the lower RPM, that would be an improvement :rockon:

Yes I have read some threads on the airbox mod.
People say the whining sound at low RPM is gone, but I'm not very enthusiastic about it because it messes with the performance of the bike a bit. (And I stay off things I dun't completely understand)
I want to play sure, and start with drilling the 2 holes in the muffler. When the sound I hear is not completely what I had in mind, I can always do the airbox mod and some dyno tuning, but then it's not for free anymore:spank:

You don't need to dyno it. In fact, you can't really get the bike adjusted on a dyno properly without buying a power commander anyway. Just take a bit off the airbox entrance instead of loads like I did & unplug the battery for a few hours. You will notice very little difference in performance - but the whine will be gone.

hmm, can't find a drill that suits.
I suggested to buy one, but my dad sayd he will make a custom bit for me.
Something about a cilinder with a 22,5mm hole in it that will fit a short 22mm bit, and held down with a small screw...

My dad and I finally drilled them yesterday.
I will try to describe what we did, but I don't know the correct technical words, I hope the pictures help.

First, we took a solid cilinder which had a diameter so it could fit in the exhaust pipes. Then we drilled a hole of 6mm in the cilinder so we could put a short 6mm drill bit in it, and screwed down with a small screw.

The drilling went fine, whith the first small holes drilled, there was no change of sound.
So we enlarged the diameter of the hole in the cilinder, so a bigger drill bit could fit in. We took a 22mm drill bit and drilled the big holes.

All of this was done with the exhaust still on the bike.

After the drilling, I started the bike, and it was like music to my ears. now you could here the exhaust much better, the sound is louder than the engine whistle at low RPM. I like it:cheer:

I went for a ride and after 30 minutes I was back at home witch a big smile on my face.

the sound is not like aftermarket exhaust, but it sure is an improvement.
There is no loss in power. I'm not sure if there is any gain either. I thought I accellerated harder, but maybe it was extra adrenaline kicking in from the exhaust sound.

I will soon upload a movie of the sound (when I can get my camera to work)

notes: Be very carefull when drilling, that you don't lose the drill bit inside the exhaust.
Also start up the engine every time you have drilled a little or big hole, so if you don't like the sound at the first hole, you can stop drilling before you screw up any further.
It's a hate it, or love it sound so please think it over before you start drilling :thumbup:

Well done Bram, that's somebody else that's drilled out the stock exhaust.

1st thing I said was that you can now hear the exhaust rather than the engine at low speeds . . .

for everyone that is strapped for cash, this is a mod that's worth doing if you want a better exhaust sound (yes it's not like a Leo, TB or Scorp but it's a start to making it sound better)

Thanks, I was practicing on my lean angle. But I can't get my knee down:spank:
I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what. Maybe I'm not sticking my knee out far enough, or my ass must be off the seat or something.
In tutorials it all seems so easy

Sorry to revive an old thread...

For all you people out there who drilled your stock exhaust---did you notice any performance changes? I drilled my stock exhaust with 3/4 holes, and while the sound did change for the better, I have the strange feeling I lost some performance...just wondering if it's just my imagination playing tricks on me. (the rest of the bike is stock)

Since you're not removing the cat and the exhaust holes are the same size, I doubt there's any difference to the power.
