Hi new to the forum and have problems with the bike. went out and started bike, started fine left it ticking over for about 25mins then engine trouble light come on when fan kicked in at (4 bars engine temp), fan stopped light went off. bike ran ok fan and engine trouble light back on fan stops light off. bike starts spluttering then cut out. tried restarting but wont start "error code 46" on display.

Fault Code: 46
Diagnostic Code: --
Symptom: Power supply to the FI system is not normal.

Probable cause of malfunction:
Malfunction in "CHARGING SYSTEM".

if i charge the battery would this fix the problem have read elsewhere on forum that bike only charges at certain rpm not when ideling?

any help would be great cheers BigT_FZ6

Charging might fix the problem as long as you have a good battery to begin with. The bike will not charge at idle. It needs minimum of 1800-2000 before the stator starts to produce a decent charge.
The code is probably from low battery voltage.

Error code 46! My god, your bike has the dreaded "Rossi" virus! Whatever you do, dont stand in front of the bike, it will make a desperate lung at you, the moment you stick your nose out in front of it!

:ban:

Sorry, could'nt resist!

Have heard of this error code before...is just about most definitely a flat battery issue! Might just need a good charge, or more likely, the battery is dead.

Sorry if this is resurrecting an old post:

I've had the same issue - fault code 46. The light would come on when I demanded high levels of fuel injection (i.e. giving it the beans), and would go off again when I stopped at lights/went back to idle. I assumed this was because my battery was dead, so I bought a new one, charged it before hand, but after putting the new battery in it's doing the same thing. Now just recently I've had the red engine light come on when I start up, and the "46" comes on the dash, but then the light goes off and doesn't re-appear.

I've checked and cleaned all of the connections I can see and given them a light spray with water displacer (WD40).

So my questions are:

1) Why has the fault code started to appear on the dash when I turn the ignition on, but not during riding?

2) I'm waiting on a mutli-meter to check the battery. What else should I check with it, and does this sound like I need to replace a part (perhaps the reg/rectifier or stator?)

thanks

Those are all good questions. The meter will be your savorier to see and understand which component is misbehaving and when. That said, you need a healthy battery to begin testing with. What brand is it and what did you charge it with?

What year is the bike, what accessories or modifications does it have if any, has it ever been jump started from a running vehicle?

Take a look at this; it has allot of detail: Trouble shooting and maintenance guide, CHARGING SYSTEM AND BATTERIES http://www.600riders.com/forum/showpost.php?p=579412

Please add any details like extra lighting, dual head lights, etc. But to your point - yes, inspect the connections at the battery, the main fuse at the battery, the RR and the connector midway between the RR and the stator coil.

Error 46 is a very common code thrown by the ECM any time there is low voltage from the power supply (battery) but there could be an actual problem with the supply voltage to the injectors. That supply voltage passes through a relay contact on a relay that is part of a module that is a little black box housing. It's called the, Starter interrupt cutout unit. It gets it's supply voltage directly from the battery via 2 fuses. The main fuse and the fuel injection system fuse. The relay coil for the fuel injection relay inside the module gets it voltage via the red kill switch. Any path that might impede the voltage to the injector circuit is suspect. When you crank the starter and it sounds like it's got plenty of healthy rotation to start the motor, it probably is not the battery. If the bike starts right away. It's probably a decent battery supply voltage.

The starter interrupt/cutout module is located in the right hand plastic pod.
It has a 16 pin connector. There should be 13 wires connected to it.

Suspect:
Fuel injection fuse (probably not)

The interrupt module may be bad as a result of the FI relay contact being bad.

Kill switch (red) may be intermittent. Wiggle it to see if you can get the code to come up. This part of the circuit supplies the relay coil and if intermittent will cause the ECM to throw a 46. The kill switch is many times the culprit in intermittent failures. The FZ6 kill switch is in a spot that is exposed to moisture. This kill switch also supplies voltage to the ignition coils. There are lots of threads on cleaning this switch. :)

As with all electronic failure, plugs, wires and grounds are always in the equation for troubleshooting.

Thanks guys. It's a 2004 model with no mods at all,no extras or heated grips. New battery is a yuasa and it's the correct one, I charged it with a trickle charger for 24 hours.

So I'll wait for the multimeter and give that a go first.

Cheers again

I just got the error code 46 today, with the exact same issues. Intermittent, goes on and off. Usually goes off once I start riding. Combining this with my major sputtering issues, wonder what the heck is going on with my bike.

mine was showing that error after disassembling the fuel pump, it ended up being an o-ring badly mounted. I reopened the fuel pump and mounted it again and it got ok!

Interesting you mentioned the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel tank a year ago and had to swap out the fuel pump from the old tank to the new. Wonder if this sputtering issue and error code has something to do with me swapping out the fuel tank.

Also the black and blue wire go near a piece of bent metal... I don't what if that is any kind of sensor and my wires were making pressure on it....:spank: after moving them away and remounting the pump it got ok as said

Turned out it was the reg/rec. It also fried my battery (which was quite new). Being a n00b, I didn't realise that the headlights popping out twice probably meant there was over-charging somewhere (I also had a license-plate bulb blow out). New reg/rec and now everything is fine, but I still had to get a new battery as my old one (only couple months old) was totally fubar'd
