Arctic Circle 2010

wait.. so thats why you had tents on the ferry.. cuz it takes a day and a half to get there??? damn.. talk about commitment

the ferry was two nights.
i never brought my tent up from the car deck (where my bike was), but some people did.
i just slept in the solarium.
you can sleep in other places like the movie lounge.
other people just paid for a cabin.

What an awesome trip! WOW. That is quite a long haul. I don't think I could take that much time off work to do that. I am very envious what a trip. Great photos too.
Thanks.

Magnificent trip and awesome pictures.

Thanks for sharing and taking the time to put it together

Dude, I did some of that on my trip. Have cousins who are trying to move to Juneau and planned that very trip for when they finally move. My wife works in st Charles county, you should have hollered at me. Would have loved to meet you guys.

If I had all the time in the world, I'd ride around and meet with forum members. Mooching off of cousins in Juneau is a good idea though. Go for it!

Haha, yes it was a pita to put this trip report together. Mine is kinda minimal, too ("skipping a bit.....")
I feel that I owe this forum a trip report, though.
I don't think I could have made it without this great community!
If I was on the gixxer forum I'd be in a ditch somewhere.....

So what is next ? How do you top that ?

No idea. We breezed by so many places, all worthy of more attention.
The good thing is that they're plenty of awesome places to ride to.

Thanks for your praise, everyone. I'm glad you all like the pics. :D

I think I'm all caught up with the comments now....

WOW man! Gr8 to see another Desi ADV rider in US. What a trip! You gotta mention some of the preparation that went into this trip and some of your best tips for such an EPIC trip.

I saw Do's (novasquid) report at FZ1OA first. I saw many more in pictures in yours though.

Haha yeah my secret identity has been revealed. A bit....
Anyways, as far as preparation, get on advrider.com and read, read, read!
Then go out on some 2 day trips and practice what you've learned.
Lather, rinse and repeat.

That's what I did, and yet I still learned a lot about touring on this 5 week trip.
Also, prepare to spend a lot of money on good gear. If you're camping, join something like REI, so you can experiment on what camping gear to bring and then make an easy return if things don't work out.
Part of the fun of camping and touring is working on your gear and figuring out what works and what doesn't.

The ferry was $212.00 one way from Prince Rupert to Haines.
For a private cabin it was another $100 or so. I never got a cabin.
We departed Prince Rupert on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 @ 06:30 PM.
Arrived in Haines on Thu, Aug 12, 2010 @ 05:45 AM.
Duration: 1 day, 11hr, 15min.

Definitely worth doing.

If you were to take the ferry, how many miles does it save off the trip?

Trying to get an idea of how much it would cost to ride it. With the price of the local fuel and if it's like a thousand miles, you could end up spending $100 for fuel alone so the ferry ride wouldn't seem that expensive. Since you recently did the trip, maybe you could provide what the actual cost of the fuel was for that area of the region.

Hmmm, not sure if it saved me much. It was a neat and relaxing way to travel up the coast. It may have saved me some time. The all land route is going north on the Cassiar and getting on to the Alcan from there. So you can check the mileage for that route and compare. The Cassiar is probably a heck of a ride, if you choose to do so. Sometimes it's closed because of forest fires, though.

Urrgh. No I don't have the cost of fuel throughout British Columbia and the Yukon. Plus it was priced as liters/canadian dollars, so I had no idea how expensive it was. Yeah, I'm that stupid! It's kind of funny, but I never needed Canadian currency for the entire trip!

How much time are you willing to spend?

gas prices, too......

quite frankly you inspired me. I have been mapping routes to get to the "circle" for the last few days. Especially after seeing the documentary "Arctic Clutch" on the Youtubes.

I think it would be a good time!

I'm such a glutton for punishment.

That's one of the best trips I've seen here. I like your pics of blue water among icebergs, it is amazing. The scenery of the death valley is really breathtaking. Thank you very much. And, for sure, you are crazy guys:rockon:

thanks for making us all jealous!:spank: :BLAA:
the comments were funny. Amusement +1

In my opinion, this should be the thread of the year.
