Suzuki Out Of MotoGP In 2012
Submitted by David Emmett on Tue, 2011-11-15 18:16

It has been expected and even predicted for the past few months now, but it appears that the final confirmation is imminent. On Monday morning, web weekly GPWeek.com reported that Suzuki will not be racing in MotoGP in 2012. According to GPWeek's Michael Scott, Rizla Suzuki team members were informed by email last Friday that Suzuki would not be racing in 2012, but that work would continue on the 1000cc prototype with the hope of returning to the series in 2014.

Suzuki's withdrawal caps a 41-year career in MotoGP, starting with privateer entries back in 1971, which took the production T500 two-stroke twin and put it into a special chassis produced by Seeley - an eerie reminder of the CRT machines due to take the stage in MotoGP in 2012 - and running through world championships for Barry Sheene, Marco Lucchinelli, Franco Uncini, Kevin Schwantz and Kenny Roberts Junior. Suzuki's fortunes started to decline with the switch to the four-stroke MotoGP machines, the factory losing serious interest in the series over the past couple of years. Suzuki cut back to just a single machine for the 2011 season, ridden by Alvaro Bautista, and now they will be pulling out altogether.

Just for added info, nothing is officially confirmed yet(only 99.999999%)

Either GPWeek had the scoop or were speculating a bit. Other sites I've read have put a question mark after the headline.

Suzuki will stick to squidding on the streets, no big surprise... :BLAA:

"What wins on Sunday sells on Monday". If Suzuki ain't in it their sales will suffer long term. The motorcycle and leisure market is in deep distress, much of it is still in survival mode. Until the economy gets going again and people feel better about their future we will continue to be in a funk. And that won't happen for at least a year.

Its a shame (once it is official). Even though they cut back to one bike this year, there were glimpses now & then that they were finding a direction with the bike.

Or was it Alvaro's riding..................

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone though...

They manufactured a machine that couldn't compete with everyone else. Obviously, any form of racing is incredibly expensive to participate. MotoGP is the highest level of motorcycle road racing which means it requires massive amounts of funding to stay around.

With Suzuki slimming down manufacturing and withholding importation of 2010 motorcycles to the US, the drop from MotoGP wasn't an if, but a when.

Here is a likely scenario: Kawasaki will probably have engines powering 2012 CRT's and Suzuki might make an engine specific to CRT's by 2013.

HRC does a backflip & decides on a 3 rider Repsol squad for 2012!

Dani look out, you got an Aussie Dual World Champ who knows but one speed & a balls to the wall Frenchman to compete with :D

Well, we can only dream!

"What wins on Sunday sells on Monday". If Suzuki ain't in it their sales will suffer long term.

But what about:

"What finishes 12th on Sunday sells on Monday"?

Not sure if that works as well.

Either way it's a shame. They were a long-time competitor and it hurts the sport to have a smaller grid even if by just one more bike.

I really hope this isn't a trend. Didn't a couple teams pull out of WSBK recently too?

So what is happening with John Hopkins? Is he staying in BSB? He hasn't officially said anything but hints at riding a Suzuki somewhere....
