Did some riding over the past couple gorgeous days here in Ky. I've had some trouble gearing down. I push down on the shifter and it won't change gears. I got stuck at a traffic light trying to roll out in 5th gear. Off the side of the road I was eventually able to reach down with my hand and jiggle it. It happened several times yesterday.
Anyone have this trouble with an FZ? Are there any adjustments that can be made to remedy this?

Let the clutch out slightly when you push down, just a little and you should find it'll change.

What the hell are you doing rolling to a stop in 5th? Change down WHILST coming to a stop, that way you can put the power down if the guy behind you doesn't slow in time!

Cheers,
Rick

No motorcycle will shift while sitting still. You gotta shift while the wheel is turning. Like mave said, downshift to 1st every time you slow down to come to a stop.

To second what Mave said, load the engine/transmission by letting the clutch out just a little then pulling it back in. You may have to do this for each downshift if you are stopped. And yes you should be downshifting as you are slowing so you always have acceleration available if you need it.

I rolled to a stop in 5th because it would not gear down.
I don't just roll up to a stoplight in 5th or 6th and then clunk down to one.

Sorry, my mistake.

If it catches, whilst trying to change down, wiggle the clutch lever in an out a bit (if your bike is like mine, the clutch grab is right at the end of the lever)

If it isn't, adjust your clutch lever so it is. (2mm gap from the stop to the lever)

I found that if I didn't have it adjusted correctly, even though it FELT like it disengaged, if wouldn't change nicely, so wound the adjuster out and now it's smooth.

Cheers,
Rick

Sorry. Don't me to sound like an a$$.

No worries Mate, my mistake.

Wife still not really speaking to me since the bike purchase and I'm just grumpy

I know the feeling!

She'll get over it, just takes time.
Be safe, and if/when you get her on the back, she'll understand.

They all do!

Cheers,
Rick

You're obviously not married - or you'd understand.

The saying is: Better to beg for forgiveness, than ask for permission.

And there will be begging, most likely!

Of course it will. You can sit on a stationary bike and go through the gears.

:spank:

But, to be fair, you may have to rock it a bit, back and forth to get the gears to mesh.

Anyway, adjust your clutch and go for a ride, and tell us your results.

Cheers,
Rick

Do ou have any "pull" foward when in 1st with clutch in, stoped? check lever play. My bike gets stiff shifting around the time for a oil change.
Good luck:thumbup:

Rode a short distance tonight and it behaved. This started happening after some pretty high speed riding over 120 miles.
A theory I came up with tonight is that maybe I wasn't bringing my toe up off the shifter enough for each change. I exaggerated this tonight and it was working ok. I'll see how it goes over next couple days.
Thanks all.

Yeah, the FZ6's transmission is not the best-shifting one that I have personally sampled.

Try changing the oil. You are correct to exaggerate the shifting motion with your foot. I sometimes do it while upshifting too.
