(2014 Thread)

These quotes are for the most basic level of insurance, which is what I get.

Current Insurance (Rider) wants $156.40 but here's the breakdown which includes competitor rates which I assume everyone else would find similarly comparable results (or rather ratios of price, company to company)

****If the coverage were to start April 27th, I'll update in a month or two to test a theory of mine****
1- Progressive: $120 ($135 as of 5/13 and 6/3)

2- Rider: $156.40 (Renewal, still same price as of 5/13 and 6/3)

3- Allstate: $274

4- AAA(...through Progressive...whut?): Didn't receive yet

5- Geico: $359

6- Foremost: $382

7- Markel $448

Also if you're wondering what I meant by basic:

Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability----------$15,000person/$30,000 accident/$5,000 property damage

Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury----------$15,000person/$30,000 accident

Pedestrian Personal Injury Protection----------$250,000(with $250 ded and 20% co-pay)

Medical Payments----------No coverage

Transport Trailer----------No coverage

Physical Damage Options----------No coverage

Comprehensive----------No coverage

Collision----------No coverage

Disappearing Deductibles----------No coverage

Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist Property Damage----------$5,000 (with $500 deductible)

Roadside Assistance----------No coverage

Accessory Coverage----------No coverage

In light of making this thread more useful I messed around with different coverage levels, check check it:

Please explain what "basic level of coverage" means?

It's recommended that you have no less than $100K coverage for liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance since motorcycle riders are more likely to sustain physical injury if struck by another vehicle.

Is that full coverage including collision and comprehesive? Your age and marital status make a huge difference on moto insurance.

I just paid my 12-month premium with Progressive. It's down this year to $12.50/month or $150/year for the FZ6 with FULL coverage and 100/300/100 coverages with $250 deductibles on comp/collision

I'm 35/married/clean record and also insure cars through Progressive which gives me another discount.

I just got my FZ6 and it is an extra $430/yr to add it to my current State Farm account. I also have my Charger and townhouse insured through them. I have 250/500/100 coverage. Deductibles are 100 comp, 500 collision.

I'm 28, not married (engaged though), with a pretty clean record. Couple speeding tickets from my younger days, but nothing recent.

We pay almost the same, except I have 250 comp and 1000 collision. I'm 24 and do not own a home though.

We had our training school's lawyer talk about insurance again, at this years annual MSF update.

In simplest terms, he reiterated that it's a very high risk to not get the maximum possible PIP (personal injury protection) and UM (uninsured motorist).

One crash can be enough to put you in very bad debt.

The founder of our school was in a crash, last year ( and this in itself is an eye opener.. if someone who's been training others how to be safe for over 25 years can be in a crash.. no one is untouchable! ) ... one of his injuries was a broken leg in several places. The bill for that alone was $110k.

Make absolute sure your health insurance covers you in case of motorcycle crashes... some will not! But it's much much cheaper to get crash coverage through your moto insurance and only use health insurance as supplement.

Progressive currently offers the highest available levels of protection in NJ.

Like motorcycle tires, "the absolute best you can afford" applies to moto insurance too.

Nationwide is kinda painful compared to thos rates up there. Bike stands alone through them as Pemco doesnt insure bikes. However, the check boxes for multi-policy discount are still X'd out.

NW: full coverage w $500 deductable...
100/200/100, includes $3000 for "custom equipment" and $2000 for rider gear 12mo premium $425

Two cages w/300 ded & collision on one (100/300/100) is just $970 year. No citations or wrecks.... Perhaps time to go shopping...

Can you educate us all on where PIP (personal injury protection) would be included on your motorcycle insurance coverages? Is it part of your Uninsured motorist insurance? Collision?

Progressive doesn't detail where this is and it has a "medical expenses" as an optional additional coverage but only up to $25,000.

EDIT: Just spoke with Progressive and they only have up to $25,000 in medical expense coverage max for the operator of the motorcycle. If you crash alone that is the max medical benefit you can get!

Like the most basic for every category

No collision/comprehensive

I'm 26 and not married and my last accident happened just over 3 years ago (1/16/12)so I have a "clean" record now.

Just updated the main post

This is always something I've had in the back of mind, especially having been through the motions in a 3 car accident where I was t-boned and suffered a permanent back injury.

I just did a new quote for this season and insurance is still pricy.

23 single male, no moving violations, located in the NYC suburbs:

Lowest rate is with Progressive (Lowest limits):

Liability: $224/yr
Add comprehensive with $500 deductible: $418/yr
Add collision with $500 deductible: $760/yr

This is bundled with my car as well

Just did a quote with Rider Insurance. EXACT same limits and coverages I have with Progressive.

Rider $890/year

Progressive $205/year

GUYS IF YOU DON'T ASK FOR MEDICAL BENEFITS COVERAGE ANY STANDARD MOTORCYCLE POLICY WILL NOT COVER ANY OF YOUR MEDICAL BILLS SHOULD YOU CRASH AT YOUR OWN FAULT! MAKE SURE IF YOU CRASH THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER VEHICLE INVOLVED WHO FLED THE SCENE! A hit and run is considered an Uninsured motorist accident and your uninsured insurance should help pay your medical bills in that case.

Customer service reps at Progressive and Rider Insurance just confirmed this for me. They told me that your medical bills would have to be covered by your own health insurance so MAKE SURE your health insurance will cover you should you need medical attention while riding a motorcycle.

Good input!
Yes, it's the UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST BODILY INJURY protection.

I just changed to Progressive this month from Rider. Rider considered the FZ6 as a sport and shot up the price for the year to $1,780 after paying around $190 last year. Switched to progressive for $145 a year full coverage $500 deductibles.

Technically, my townhouse is considered a "condo" so it's not the same coverage or cost of a single family home insurance policy. Still, I'm surprised our rates are so close with you being under 25. My rates went down pretty good once I hit 25-26. Then again, if you put your deductibles down, i'm sure it would add a few bucks.

As mentioned in another thread - track days are likely NOT covered should you splat and ruin bike and rider. Better double check if you expect your VEHICLE POLICY to mend broken bones....

Check and read the fine print. I am curious WHERE advanced rider trainer would fit in.

FROM: Your insurance policy and the fine print; did you look?

A couple of excerpts from my motorcycle policy which could render the policy useless to us the insured. The entertaining stuff is is in bold.
--> NO - Not that I would run from LEO. But, should you choose to do so, I'm guessing a new bike is the least of your worries.

Coverage Exclusions, We will not pay for;
12. which occurs:
a) while your recreational vehicle is being used by you, a relative or anyone else with your knowledge or permission if such vehicle is being used:
(1) in any illegal activities (other than a traffic violation); or
(2) to flee any law enforcement agent :spank:

13. caused intentionally by or at the direction of you or a relative, including willful acts the result of which that person knows or ought to know will follow from their conduct.

15. to your recreational vehicle or safety apparel while used in any competitive event, including but not limited to drag or speed racing, hill climbing, stunting activities, or in practice or preparation for such an event. This exclusion does not apply to parades or escorting participants in charitable racing events.

20. occurring while your recreational vehicle has been abandoned, unless necessary because of a medical emergency

25. to a recreational vehicle when used for any purpose not intended by the manufacturer.

NUMBER 20, IF I READ THAT RIGHT ^^ lets say you get a flat and leave the bike. ** IT APPEARS ** these folks are off the hook unless you claim a medical emergency.... WOW!

Oh - and don't piss off your relatives! lol
Just thought I'd share some fun facts from Nationwide.. .. ..

FWIW: The Hit and Run section is entertaining too! They BETTER MAKE CONTACT and if they don't, you need an eye witness to PROVE you're TELLING THE TRUTH!!! A video may not be enough! But, those views are changing so, roll film!

That is all well and good if someone with low/no insurance hits you. I don't think un/under insured coverage covers the rider in a single vehicle accident.

I have health coverage through my employer. I will let them pay.

Oh they will pay, some. Most health insurance has a high annual deductible so you may be stuck with $1,000 0r more right there if you end up riding in an ambulance for an ER and hospital stint. Most insurance also doesn't cover 100% after deductible is met. :spank:

Well I have progressive, it's likely cheaper than statefarm. I'v also had continuous motorcycle coverage with them for the last six years with no tickets or claims.

OP, the minimums you've list are way too low. $15K is only the ambulance ride for the car you just nailed.

Liability is usually inexpensive. Often times, for another $15 to $20 you can increase your coverage by 10X. Personally I wouldn't carry less than 100K/300K/50K. For my bikes and cars we are at 250/500/100. If you qualify you can also layer the motorcycle policy under a $1M umbrella policy for about $200 a year. That way if you T-Bone a van with a family 10 you've got some coverage.

Ask your agent, you'll probably be in a pleasant surprise.

Personally I feel that UM and PIP is a waste of money. Spend it on comp and collision, and a good health insurance policy. I've need a medivac helicopter ride in the past, and I only cost me $1,000 for the copter, ER and a week in the hospital.

Food for thought. :)

Maybe I did it wrong but it doubled or nearly doubled with the changes you recommended...
I changed the Rider and Progressive real quick to see and now they're:
100/300/50
Rider:$271.42

Progressive:$259.00

25/50/10
Rider:$202.81

Progressive:$129.00

50/100/25
Rider:$229.04

Progressive:$189.00
