Hi all,

I hope this isn't a redundant thread, but I could use some help. I have a FZ6 with 67k miles on it. It had been running great and the fuel pump just died. No operation at all.

I replaced it with an Ebay pump. Bad idea. Initially it ran again, but it seemed to be running lean. It smelled funny when it was running, and would bog off idle. NOT running rich. Once hot it ran OK, but then it would be hard to start if you shut it off. Over a couple of months it got worse to where it would barely start and run. Not ridable.

I checked for trouble codes and there were NONE.

I pulled the tank and the pump - the sock filter had disintegrated. Ordered a better quality fuel pump from Amazon that had a bunch of good reviews. Replaced it and the strainer/sock. I assume that the fuel rail and injectors are probably clogged as well, so I ordered a used serviceable fuel rail and injectors. I installed those, checked and made sure all the vacuum hoses are installed correctly etc. Put it back together. I have fuel pump start when I turn on the key and put the engine switch in the run position, however, it will crank and no start at all.

I've been wrenching on bikes and cars since my first Yamaha MX100 back in the early 80s. This thing has me pretty bitter at this point. Not sure how to even DX this thing. Anyone have any advise on what to check?

PS: my fuel gauge now flashes, the wiring is connected so I am assuming I damaged one of the crimps. I'll address that if and when I get the damned thing running!

Thanks to the group in advance for any helps!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

The first thing I would do is replace the used fuel rail and injectors with your original ones. You have complicated this issue by throwing (used) parts at the problem. While I agree the fuel rail could have had some FOD, it can also be cleaned.

While this problem started as a fuel pump issue, you may be chasing the wrong issue. I would start with the basics and check for spark. Then I would use some starting fluid to see if you can get the bike to come to life for a second. If you can confirm that ignition system is properly functioning then you can begin to tackle other things. Given that you are using an off-brand fuel pump, I’d start with a fuel pressure test.
