I just bought a Bandit 1250 SEA (Canadian model with bags and full fairing). I thought I would post a quick review and comparison to my FZ6.

On paper the Bandit makes the same HP as an FZ6..... so you may be asking, what's the point of buying a bike that weighs more without doing more.... Ironically, the Bandit's jewel in the crown is it's motor.... Might I add what a motor! The Bandit is a freight train.... The engine develops it's max torque by 3700 rpm.... that's right 80ft/lbs at 3700 rpm and maintains a flat torque curve all the way to just below peak rpm (9500rpm). You can pull 6th gear without a fuss as low as 2000rpm... Sweep the tach past 4000 in sixth though, and leave the FZ6 as a tiny speck in the rear views. What's more the motor is so smooth, you can't believe your eyes when you look down a see your doing 140 kph and increasing. The FZ6 will eventually keep pace, but you will need to be a good rider to do so.
The motor is the smoothest inline four I have ever ridden and the transmission shifts with a satisfying "snick" up or down... no clunking to be found... Far superior to the FZ6's tranny...
The bike feels like an FZ6, even in handling (despite being about 50 or so ponds heavier). I found myself riding it the same way I ride my FZ6... The Bandit however, has much superior suspension... The forks have pre-load adjustment. The rear shock has pre-load and rebound damp adjustment.
The riding position is pretty much identical to the FZ6, however the seat is wider with about the same comfort level.
There is no temp gauge on the Bandit, just a temp warning light.... The speedo is useless... it is incredibly inaccurate... My GPS said 79 Kph while the speedo said 85kph. I never had time to check the odo..., but I am not feeling positive about that either... The FZ6 was only a few KPH off of the GPS numbers.
The ABS system works very well..... I now believe (this is first time I have ridden a bike with it) it would be very useful to beginner riders.... The brakes are not as poweful as the FZ6's but the added control of the ABS is re-assuring. The back brake is all but useless compared to the FZ6.

Pros
1) Motor, Motor, Motor! Torque a 747 would be envious of
2) Good suspension
3) Came with luggage and full fairing
4) Handling is decent
5) Wind protection, about the same as an FZ6
6) Oil level window, easy to check level
7) ABS is very useful and well integrated (more than I thought it would be)
8) Very little driveline lash
9) Hydraulic clutch, wider engagement and smoother
10) Fuel injection is flawless, no glitches or surging
11) Bargin price for what you get

Cons
1) Fit and finish not up the FZ6's
2) Frame a little ugly, FZ6 has a work of art for a frame
3) Oil change more difficult as filter is behind fairings and exhaust (minor)
4) Instrument cluster a little old fashioned and no temp read out
6) Motor should be blacked out (personal opinion)
7) FZ6 is a much prettier bike, with clean lines and under tail exhaust:)
8) FZ6 better thought out, thus easier to work on, more aftermaket stuff than the Bandit...

Maybe more later....

Before I bought my FZ6 I was looking at the Bandit the only thing that turned me off to the bike was the HUGE muffler hanging on the side And the price was on the outer range of what I wanted to pay . Very nice bike

The bandit has been a solid platform for years. Yes, it is heavier at a dry weight of 504 pounds which will effect its ability to flick about and especially in the twisties and traffic. The Bandit also has a longer wheelbase than the FZ6. In an all out dual with equal riders the Bandit would be very hard pressed to get away from the little 600 with a mind to rev.......

I would have to agree with you... The FZ6 would eventually catch and pass the Bandit... no contest there..... The Bandit's flexible motor beats the FZ6 hands down everywhere else.... Roll on (in any gear).... Passing traffic is just a matter of openning the throttle. I was surprised how "tight" of a handling package the Bandit has... all things considered. Yes, the FZ6 (with an experienced rider) would out corner it as well.... But, the Bandit (with an experienced rider as well), would be right on your tail. Accidently drop out of the "power band" on the FZ6, however.... the Bandit will rip passed you...

The Bandit came out in like 1996 and it has been an awesome all around bike much like the current FZ6. The engine has also been a flawless performer during its tenure. As the the case with most large CC machines their greatest advantage is torque. As for roll on, if the FZ6 were at 50% of its powerband 7,000rpm in 4th gear and the Bandit were there at 50% too, I think the FZ6 would give the Bandit a run for it..

SuperBike magazine that I just picked up had a test of a 1250 Bandit GT (luggage + faring lowers + sat nav) vs BMW F650 vs a Honda CBF1000. Not sure if you have that bike over the pond.

The Bandit came second despite being allot cheaper. Let down by suspension, engine and brakes, not to say they were bad just the CBF was better. If you want a budget tourer get the Bandit but the one to get was the CBF, was what it was saying.

They do a Bandit 1250 Street fighter version over here which looks very nice with renthal bar and a seat cowl and very good price.

What... no engine temp gauge?

I'm sure the instrument gauges provides all the necessary information, but we have these wonderful electronics and somehow the manufacturers fail to give us (this or that) useful information. Oh well, if the bike is not overheating why should we concern ourselves... sometimes its best to keep it simple.

It is a nice looking bike. A good value for money and with luggage cases I'll bet a long trip is in your plans. :)

The temp guage wouldnt be a selling point for me. I have had a bunch of bikes and the fz is the first one i have had with a temp guage. It is convenient but not necessary.

When I first saw the attached pic, I thought, "why did he attach an FJR pic?" The only Bandits I've seen here in the US are the semi-dressed versions. Good looking bike though, sounds like a good ride too.

Is the Bandit air cooled?

While we have less of a selection across the pond here, we do have the GSX650F which has the drive train (the best part) of the Bandit 650. It also has a better instrument panel then the 1250 with a temp gauge, gear selection indicator and digital speedometer. It has a full fairing that is similar to the 2005 GSX750R. I was very much interested in the GSX650F before getting the FZ6, but could not get a test ride. I think it is a little different, but has its pluses too. And please, weight is not the only thing to look at. These are not supersports bikes. As for the muffler - yoshimura makes a nice one for the bandit/gsx650f.
Congrats on your new bike - I wish we had more bikes with ABS here.

I just bought a Bandit 1250 SEA (Canadian model with bags and full fairing).

My son's Father-in-Law just purchased the same bike last week. :)
We're starting to go on "group" rides now with my son (on his KLR) and his b-in-l on his KLR. I don't feel disadvantaged at all on my FZ6, but I do envy Dave his Bandit's torquey motor. I'm a lot busier than he is, both in town and in the country keeping my FZ6 'cooking'....but that's the fun part, and why I love my FZ6.
Two-up would be a lot more fun on the Bandit, however.
Oddly enough, I can get my heels flat on the ground on the Bandit, whereas I can't on my FZ6, even though both have the same seat height. I think it's the shape of the seat....the Bandit's seat is a bit narrower at the front than my FZ6's.
Now I REALLY want that Comfort Seat. :)

That depends as the Bandit seat height can be adjusted from 30.9 to 31.7 inches.

Nice ride Canada, I 've always liked that bike. The engine is very nice and the size of the bike is great for going two up. Enjoy!

I understand and agree. I guess my point was that if your going to the trouble of manufacturing a digital display, then give us some useful information.
