The smaller center hub goes to the gear box directly.
The outer clutch basket goes direct to the engine.
The clutch plates, when pressed together with the clutch springs, connects the two.
As for the above post ^^, yes there's a tad of back lash play in the gear box however, if your missing a tooth
inside, they'll be a real large gap at that one spot. You can also simply rotate the center shaft(inner clutch hub) while in gear
, there's some drag with the chain and rear wheel. If a tooth is missing, again, you'll feel it jump a decent amount...
If /when you find you that space(its broke), you should be able to rotate that shaft back and forth in that gap. then say
you rotate 180 degrees, where the teeth are good, you won't have that "gap"..
In neutral, your bad gear is not engaging(or "involved"), thus no noise..
As a side note, I blew my second gear idler (lost a couple teeth) on an old yamaha 125cc simply coming off a jump
(this is back in the mid 70's). It was hard ground I landed on and apparently enough to bust the teeth off...
