Scope of thread has changed: Final Impact's rides and photos of various locations around me.
Thread updated as they occur in 2013 withaA few maps, and basic ride reports.. .. ..

- - - - - - - - -

As the saying goes, some roads must be traveled. After riding down a nice twisty road which I must say had its own taste of diversity - moss covered between the tracks, gravel, mud, and the worst - wet pine needles, well I found this road that should take me around the washed out damaged road, but the black top ended and it turned to gravel, mud, streams with small wash outs. We fordged ahead down the grade as it had no room to turn around plus it was very steep. I was wondering if my street tire would go up it if I had to turn back! Had it not been so steep and narrow I would have stopped and taken a picture but it just wasn't safe to do so.
It was an adventure; one which i'm sure my usual riding buddy would not have done. The nose slid around a few times and bumped over a few rocks but overall it went well and we didn't go down!

I've been on pure gravel roads for a few miles but cool things like mud & gravel roads I've always turned back. There is so much more exploring to be done so a new bike may be in order one day. Not soon, but one day. Now its time for Crisis to get a bath before I put her covers on her!

Miho had a good time today on some questionable roads, nothing like your adventure, only about a half of a mile of potholed gravel 2up on my way to play volleyball, but still, dusty enough that I gave her a sudsy bath when we got home.

I am really contemplating getting Suzuki Dr650 for this very reason. the problem is that there's no state parks or places to go off road within 100 mile radius of NYC. So I am contemplating whether it's worth even getting the bike the chances of me planning a get away for one day even makes sense if I have to ride 100 miles just to get there. Maybe instead of the Dr650 I should get Suzuki Vstrom 650 and call it a compromise.

Too Funny, G-maps won't allow me to connect the dots; i.e. add a point past Point C. so I added a STAR as the destination. It is in fact a road, but not registered I suspect! lol

Inhospitable sums up that road....

I know that area...... Never knew that road was there though.

If you're going to keep riding those roads I think you need a set of these.

If I remember correctly they're even a tubeless tire. Just mount them up and go play :D

Of course you might want a skid plate and crash bars just in case the off-road grip of the tires makes you forget you're on the FZ6 :D

no offroading opportunities around NYC? what about... NYC roads? it's like a trail - raised thermal joints for roots, pedestrians for deer and warm soft bodies of &%^** bicyclists for mossy logs as you run over them . Every time I'm riding I pray my suspension can take it.

On a more serious note, between the more off-roady dr650 and a more on-road vstrom 650, there lies the domain of The Swamp Thing, aka KLR 650. Highly recommended. :hijack:

1 tank of fuel, 3 hours with the hammer down! It was a GREAT Day for a Ride! Even solo I had a blast! Forest service roads are a hoot! Very technical with large holes, tree parts, trees, rocks, needles, deer, what hoot!!! no pun there, I saw no owls! :D

For those of you around me, I have a ride for you!!!! I'm pumped!

Thanks for the pictures of your off-pavement ride

As you've discovered riding the forest service roads and exploring off-pavement can be a lot of fun and very addictive. There are so many places to explore and things to see especially here in the Pacific NW. :D

If you decide to add a Dual Sport bike to your collection I've had a bunch of them and would be happy to share what I've learned about the different bikes I've owned.

I was talking with my father and told him where this picture was and he said it used to be fire watch observation point. A little research and walla - from 1925 to 1965 finds this was a lookout point to observe and report fires....
Looking back it was a great ride! One I shall repeat! High Rocks
I found this picture from 1959 -

Great pictures

So now that you are eating up tires how long before you replace them with a more dual sport tire?

Or will you be getting a Super Tenere after test riding one over the weekend?

Jon...

Knaa, can't go that route just yet. I have a NEW Battle Axe S20 waiting to be mounted. I thought this would last out the season as its last years tire BT-016 Pro with about 6400 miles on it. The back was thrashed at 5200 or so.

There are so many roads I've driven past my whole life so I'm having a ball just seeing where they go! When i got home last night I loaded area maps on my phone just in case I need them. Some of the Forest Service Roads can be confusing.....

Thanks for Checking in Jon!

I hear ya regarding being able to check roads out that you used to pass up. I've owned a bunch of dual sport/adventure bikes over the years just for that reason.

Maybe once I get the engine guards on I'll try exploring a few of the forest roads outside of Estacada that I know/hope will not kill the FZ.

That reminds me, I came across this video of some FZ6 riders crossing a river.

Enjoy...

I rode my XR in a few streams & creeks, but I couldn't do that to Crisis! Dirt bike, you spin a wheel bearing and it costs money. Street bike might cost your life!

Thanks Jon! You don't need crash cage to do gravel roads! lol
