Hey everyone,

Having seen the 'Do you use your clutch' thread reappear I thought it would be an idea to see how many fingers people use on their clutch and brake levers most of the time.

Also, if this changes in different situations (gear changes, slow moving traffic, manoeuvres, etc), if you could please explain the particular situation and your reasons for changing as this would be very interesting to know.

Thank you in advance for taking part!

The word fingers had now lost all meaning after typing out that poll!

I ride most of the time with three fingers on the brake lever, and squeeze the gas with the first two making a circle around tbhe grip. I find it unsafe not to have the fingers on brake, especially in city

I ride 2 on the brake all the time just in case I need to brake quickly, and 4 on the clutch. Definitely shift faster that way compared to 2 for me.

gear changes, slow moving traffic, maneuvers, etc)

These options should be included in the poll to give it better depth.
I use 3 fingers on the clutch lever (because I am not BIONIC) or none when up shifting when riding hard.
Two fingers on the brake unless I'm having a bum puckering moment and then It's none ( because braking isn't always the only option) or a full on handful.

Stupid poll, but anyway. For those of you, who use more than 2 fingers for the brake lever - you guys have no idea what riding is, the best thing you can do is to sell your bike and buy Volvo. Do you want to find out what riding is? Go to school, learn how to ride and go back to public roades. Good luck.

45% use more fingers than 2..... holy cr#p.....

Thank you for your compliment,

just tell me, if you use 4 fingers to control you brake lever, what will you use to control acceleration?
a little hint "trail-braking..."

4 fingers for both, I have stock levers.

If you ever take the safety courses, they tell you that you physically can't squeeze the brakes (or clutch) as hard with 2 or 3 fingers - as you can with 4.

In a scenario where it really matters, I would much rather have full strength of 4 fingers applying brakes, rather than using 2 fingers out of muscle memory and not achieving full braking. 2 feet can make or break you on a bike, and I want full braking potential - which you really can't achieve (on stock levers) by squeezing the inside of the lever with only 2 fingers.

Guaranteed I stop faster with 4 fingers than you do with 2 (granted you don't have shorty levers or after market discs/brakes.

Well if your using four fingers to brake, you most definitely are controlling your acceleration lol.
Your talking about trail braking, yes the slightest and delicate touch, in order to gain stability to get back on the power quickly.
Of course you can use two fingers.
There are lots of variables which the poll doesn't account for.
I personally like lots of travel in my brake leaver and even though my levers are adjustable I have the leaver set furthest away from the bar. I have small hands and get better reach over the leaver by opening all my fingers When having to stop rapidly.
But thats just my preference which hasn't changed much in the last 25 years.
